From the Acting Principal

I am pleased to welcome students and staff back to Term Two after our Easter holiday break.

This term Catherine Lockhart, our Principal, will be on leave and so I will be Acting Principal for the remainder of the semester. Matt Baron will replace me as Deputy Principal, with Geoff Geddes taking on the role of Acting Head of Junior School.

We welcome several new staff members to our College community. They are:

Fiona Duthie – Director of People & Culture

Cody Roberts – LMS Administrator (Schoolbox)

Erin Hoare - Psychologist

Alex Haby – Junior School Learning Support Officer

Diana Schepisi – Senior School French Teacher

Jenny Quinn - Junior School Teacher

Bridget Sweeney – Senior School Art Assistant

We have begun the school term with our flags flying at half mast as a mark of respect to the victims of the Bondi Junction stabbings. Media coverage of this tragedy and ongoing conflicts across the globe, including the Gaza war, can be confronting and distressing.

It is timely to remind ourselves of how to approach these tragic events with sensitivity and age-appropriate information. Here are some guidelines for addressing children:

Be Honest and Age-Appropriate:

Tailor your explanation to the child’s age and understanding. Younger children need simpler explanations, while older ones can handle more details. Use clear language without graphic descriptions. For instance, you might say, “There was a very sad incident where some people got hurt.”

Listen and Validate Feelings:

Encourage children to express their emotions. Some may feel scared, sad, or confused. Validate their feelings by saying, “It’s okay to feel that way.”

Focus on Helpers and Heroes:

Highlight stories of bravery, compassion, and people who helped during the incident. Explain that police officers, paramedics, and others work hard to keep us safe.

Limit Exposure to News:

Shield young children from graphic news images or repetitive coverage. Monitor their media consumption and provide context if they come across related news.

Answer Questions Honestly:

If children ask about the incident, provide simple and truthful answers. Avoid speculation or unnecessary details.

As adults, we can be confronted by many current media reports and so it is all the more important that we need to help young people process what they are presented with. Children process information differently, so we must be patient and ready to address their concerns following the above guidelines as best we can.

Monday of this week saw our staff gather for fruitful professional development and planning sessions. We have an amazing team here at the College and we are really looking forward to delivering valuable and enriching experiences for our students this term.

From the Head of Senior School

Welcome back to Term 2!

It’s been lovely to have our students back at school these last two days and to see them jump immediately back into all their classes and activities.

We’re looking forward to the House Cross Country competition next week, which will occur on Friday 26 April. All students are expected to participate, as they are in all whole-school events. Some students will be challenging themselves to set personal bests, others will enjoy a run (or walk) around the Barwon River with friends. Any students who are injured and unable to run on the day should have a note from a parent to that effect, and can instead support the event in organisational roles. These whole-school events, such as Cross-Country, Athletics, and Founders Day, are all integral aspects of our experience as a school community.

From the Acting Head of Junior School

Dear families,

Welcome back. This week students have returned to their learning looking very settled and refreshed. While chatting with students on Tuesday, it was clear that they had enjoyed their break, but it was also clear that they were very happy to return to their friends at school. It was a lovely reminder that we are all part of a wonderful community here at Kardinia.

Growth at the Grove

Our Year 5 students rushed off the bus with excitement on Tuesday to check on the seeds they planted at the end of Term 1. These plants are a huge part of their winter crop. Students were very pleased to see that their plants had survived the Autumn break and they look forward to taking care of them, and finally selling them at their Friday market.

Celebrating Culture in Year 2

Year 2 students have stepped into their How we Express Ourselves unit this week. The unit has started with students creating a museum of artefacts which celebrate cultures they have a connection with. Throughout the unit, students will explore different forms of art, make connections to beliefs and cultures, and of course do some creating themselves.

Technology and Innovation in the Junior School

Late Term 1, Tim Kitchen delivered a full day workshop in the Junior School. It was a wonderful opportunity for staff and students to learn more about the Adobe products we have access to at Kardinia. Please click on the image below to view a short video created by Tim. It captures the day nicely.

If you would like to learn more about the day, Tim also wrote this blog post. Staff and students are very excited to continue this journey in Term 2.

School TV - Happiness and Gratitude

Happiness is defined as the balance of positive and negative emotions, combined with overall life satisfaction. Happiness and gratitude have been studied in positive psychology for many years and researchers have found that gratitude is always strongly associated with greater happiness. Although everyone has their own definition of happiness, many of us want to feel more positive emotions than negative ones. However, negative emotions are still important. They have a lot to teach us and alert us when things need to change. Practising gratitude helps people feel more of the positive emotions, enable us to relish good experiences, improve our overall health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.
