Years 7 to 10

Home Years 7 to 10

While our campus is temporarily closed, teachers will continue to facilitate learning by making materials and activities available so that each student can continue progressing in their vertical curriculum units. The various learning activities will provide approaches that emphasise elements such as interaction, inquiry, response, practice and creativity.

While variations to program delivery will inevitably occur, the remote learning program will ensure students continue to learn key concepts and further develop skills as outlined in their curriculum program. Assessments and teacher feedback relating to completed learning tasks will be provided to students though they may be approached in different ways, as a result of distance education.

Our Approach

The College’s approach to remote learning ensures:

  • Learning materials are shared via KICOnline and/or OneNote.
  • Learning activities are designed to be engaging, develop core understandings and allow students to deepen their understanding through open ended explorations of elements of the course.
  • Learning activities will entail: –
    • working independently on devices,
    • connecting to teachers and classmates online,
    • working on learning activities that include time away from devices.
  • Learning activities have a number of purposes:
    • allow students to engage with new learning
    • practice, discuss or apply learning
    • demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to learning
  • Assessment tasks enable students to demonstrate their understanding and help their teachers provide feedback on student progress.

We expect that all students will actively engage in the set online learning sequences and activities during the campus closure. With all of the online tools the College has made available, a student is fully enabled to continue their learning.

Weekly Schedule

Live Classes through Microsoft Teams

Live Classes

Two Live Classes will be held each week for all Level A – E units. One of the Live Classes will take place in the normal scheduled double period, and will go for a maximum of 60 minutes. The other Live Class will be in a prescribed single period and will go for at least 15 minutes and at most 40 minutes.

Student attendance at a Live Class is compulsory and attendance will marked. Consistent absences will be followed up with parents by House Coordinators.

If a student or parent anticipates an absence from a Live Class, an email must be sent to the class teacher before 9:00am on the day of the scheduled class. The absence can also be communicated through the Kardinia App or by calling the College on (03) 5278 9999.

Student Engagement in Live Classes
  • During Remote Learning, students will be expected to participate in one live class per week for each unit they are completing.
  • For students in years seven to eleven this will typically be seven classes over each week and for students in year twelve, four to six classes.
  • The classes will be conducted via Microsoft Teams.
  • Live Classes will take place in the scheduled double period, which go for a maximum of 60 minutes, and a prescribed single period, which will go for between 15 and 40 minutes. Please refer to the Live Class timetable to determine where single periods have been scheduled.
  • Attendance in Live Classes is compulsory.

All usual expectation of students will apply during live classes. A teacher may exclude a student from a live class if s/he is not complying with College expectations. If this occurs, the matter will be referred to the Head of Senior School.

Participating in Live Classes

Students must follow these protocols:

  • Log into Microsoft Teams 10 minutes prior to the live class start time.
  • Wait until the teacher has started the live class in teams before beginning a conversation.
  • Do not share your computer screen without the consent of the teacher.
  • Do not record live classes.
  • If a teacher chooses to record a live class, s/he will indicate that recording is taking place. If a student objects to the recording, he/she may leave the class after informing the teacher.

Dress Expectations for Live Classes

  • Students need to ensure they are dressed appropriately for live classes. While students won’t wear school uniform, they must dress consistently with the school’s dress code.
  • Students who fail to dress appropriately will be excluded by the teacher.

Consideration of Background for Live Class

  • Students need to setup a space in their home, other than in their bedroom, that is appropriate for participating in a live class. In setting up this space, students need to consider what can be seen through the camera.
  • It is possible to use the Microsoft Team settings to blur the background.
  • Again, a student may be excluded from a live class if the background in their screen shot is not acceptable.

Absences

  • The teacher will mark the attendance record for each class.
  • If a student is unable to participate in a scheduled live class, the student’s parent or guardian must contact the College before 9:00am on the day of the non-participation.
  • The absence can be communicated through the following means:
    • Email the teacher directly;
    • Use the ‘Absence’ function on the Kardinia App; or
    • Call the College on (03) 5278 9999.
What do students, families and teacher need to do...

Students

To make the most of the remote learning program, it is essential that students …

  • Establish a daily routine to support their learning.
  • Identify a comfortable, quiet spaceto work effectively.
  • Check KICOnline news feeds and College email daily for any updates.
  • Complete tasks and activities in either KICOnline or OneNote Class Notebooks. Some of these tasks will be reviewed by teachers and feedback will be provided (either online or during the next Live Class, as indicated in instructions).
  • Participate in Live Classes with teachers and peers.
  • Complete assessment tasks.
  • Factor in time to have breaks, play, rest and be active.
  • Communicate proactively with teachers. Ask questions. But be patient when waiting for a response. If a teacher emails, responding in a timely manner aids effective communication.
  • Are mindful of their workload and well-being. Concerns should be raised with teachers or the House Coordinator. If there are concerns that go beyond a class, always email the House Coordinator to share concerns.
  • For technical problems, please email helpdesk@kardinia.vic.edu.au or call the College on (03) 5278 9999 and select option 4.

Families

For families, we understand that this is a new experience. We encourage you to support students by …

  • Asking questions of appropriate people as well as talking about learning, upcoming deadlines, and managing workload.
  • Help your child develop daily routines.
  • Encourage your child to take study breaks and to take part in physical exercise.
  • Be mindful of your child’s wellbeing; speak to them regularly about concerns or challenges.
  • Choose a learning location that is suitable to be seen by peers and teachers if students are using video tools.
  • Create opportunities for your child to interact with peers to maintain connections with their school community.
  • Ensure your children are dressed appropriately when using video tools.
  • If there are siblings simultaneously online, choose locations that do not cause noise interference when participating in Live classes (video conferencing).
  • Communicate any concerns to your child’s teacher or House Coordinator via email.
  • Keep your Notebook computer charged and with you when traveling.

Teachers

Teachers are ready and equipped with all the necessary tools and skills to make sure learning is not interrupted. The teachers will …

  • Regularly post educational tasks / learning materials for the students.
  • Plan learning activities that are easily understood and can be implemented by students from their home environments.
  • Provide learning activities that include time away from devices.
  • Provide reflection and feedback on specific completed educational tasks for individual students.
  • Conduct summative assessments to assess learning, and provide feedback to both students and parents.
  • Conduct a one-hour Live Class, which provides teacher/student interaction.
