Years 11 and 12

Home Years 11 and 12

Years 11 and 12, VCE and IB Diploma Programs

When the campus is temporarily closed, KIC teachers will continue to deliver both the VCE and IB Diploma planned curriculums. Remote Learning will provide learning materials and assessment opportunities that follow the current written course outlines of the VCE and IB DP syllabi. Students will continue to work through their programs to maintain their learning in readiness for internal and external assessments.

Our Approach

As Senior Students, your teachers will be setting at least four self-paced learning activities that you need to complete each week. Teachers will then provide appropriate feedback so that you can continue with your learning.

  • Learning materials are shared via KicOnline and/or OneNote.
  • Learning activities are designed to be engaging, develop core understandings and allow students to deepen their understanding through open ended explorations of elements of the course.
  • Learning activities may entail: –
    • working independently on devices,
    • connecting to teachers and classmates online,
    • working on learning activities that include time away from devices.
  • Learning activities have a number of purposes:
    • allow students to engage with new learning
    • practice, discuss or apply learning
    • demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to learning
  • Assessment tasks enable students to demonstrate their understanding and help their teachers provide feedback on student progress.

We expect that all students will actively engage in the set online learning sequences and activities during the campus closure. With all of the online tools the College has made available, a student is fully enabled to continue their learning.

Weekly Schedule

Live Classes

Live Classes

Year 11 & 12 students will participate in two sessions per week with their teacher.  One Live Class will be in the normal scheduled double period lasting a maximum of 100 minutes. The other Live Class will be in a prescribed single period lasting a maximum of 50 minutes. Please refer to the schedule below to see the timing or corresponding single periods.

Student attendance at a Live Class is compulsory and attendance will marked. Consistent absences will be followed up with parents by House Coordinators.

If a student or parent anticipates an absence from a Live Class, an email must be sent to the class teacher before 9:00am on the day of the scheduled class. The absence can also be communicated through the Kardinia App or by calling the College on (03) 5278 9999.

Student Engagement in Live Classes
  • During Remote Learning, students will be expected to participate in one live class per week for each unit they are completing.
  • For students in years seven to eleven this will typically be seven classes over each week and for students in year twelve, four to six classes.
  • The classes will be conducted via Microsoft Teams.
  • Live Classes will take place in the scheduled double period, which go for a maximum of 100 minutes, and a prescribed single period, which will go for up to 40 minutes. Please refer to the Live Class timetable to determine where single periods have been scheduled.
  • Attendance in Live Classes is compulsory.

All usual expectation of students will apply during live classes. A teacher may exclude a student from a live class if s/he is not complying with College expectations. If this occurs, the matter will be referred to the Head of Senior School.

Participating in Live Classes

Students must follow these protocols:

  • Log into Microsoft Teams 10 minutes prior to the live class start time.
  • Wait until the teacher has started the live class in teams before beginning a conversation.
  • Do not share your computer screen without the consent of the teacher.
  • Do not record live classes.
  • If a teacher chooses to record a live class, s/he will indicate that recording is taking place. If a student objects to the recording, he/she may leave the class after informing the teacher.

Dress Expectations for Live Classes

  • Students need to ensure they are dressed appropriately for live classes. While students won’t wear school uniform, they must dress consistently with the school’s dress code.
  • Students who fail to dress appropriately will be excluded by the teacher.

Consideration of Background for Live Class

  • Students need to setup a space in their home, other than in their bedroom, that is appropriate for participating in a live class. In setting up this space, students need to consider what can be seen through the camera.
  • It is possible to use the Microsoft Team settings to blur the background.
  • Again, a student may be excluded from a live class if the background in their screen shot is not acceptable.

Absences

  • The teacher will mark the attendance record for each class.
  • If a student is unable to participate in a scheduled live class, the student’s parent or guardian must contact the College before 9:00am on the day of the non-participation.
  • The absence can be communicated through the following means:
    • Email the teacher directly;
    • Use the ‘Absence’ function on the Kardinia App; or
    • Call the College on (03) 5278 9999.
VCE School Assessed Coursework

VCE School Assessed Coursework

As far as possible, SACs will be completed remotely. SAC tasks will be amended to allow students to demonstrate proficiency in each of the outcomes. SACs may take the form of:

• Essays

• Short answer questions

• Research tasks

• Practical projects that can be undertaken safely in a home environment.

As far as possible, teachers will be flexible in setting and administering SACs. However, it is important that students’ work can still be authenticated consistently with the College Academic Honesty Policy.

IB Diploma Program Assessments

IB Diploma Programme

Internal Assessments

Internal Assessments that have already been started will continue. There will be regular communication between teachers and students as the work is being completed as this is part of the verification process required by the IBO. The work will also be authenticated in line with the IBO Academic Integrity protocols and the College’s Academic Honesty Policy.

Indicative Assessments

Indicative assessments will continue to be offered remotely to students. These may take the form of online tests, practice exams, research tasks etc. These assessments will be adapted by teachers so that they can be completed online.
