Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 9 February 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 9 February 2022

From the Deputy Principal

As we navigate our way through the beginning of a new school year, with great uncertainty around what Omicron might present us with, it has been pleasing to see the College community working together to keep us all safe.

In the last seven days we have had five positive cases amongst Highview students, fifteen positive cases in the Junior School and twenty-nine positive cases in the Senior School. Some of these students have been in isolation when they have tested positive. No staff have tested positive in the last seven days.

We thank those families who are being vigilant and monitoring for symptoms and using the Rapid Antigen Tests to test their children twice weekly. We are waiting for the next supply of RATs and once they arrive, we will notify families and distribute them to you.

At the College we are working to keep good air flow in our learning spaces and are supplementing this with air purifiers in areas that require it. The correct wearing of masks is also a key element in keeping students and staff safe. As the term progresses, we will keep you informed of COVID strategies and further actions as the need arises. Working together, we will keep Kardinia a safe place for our children.

From the Head of Junior School

Information Evening
Tomorrow is Information Evening in the Junior School for families in FY, Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4 and Y6. Learning Group teachers will be running Zoom sessions for families, while Single Subject Teachers, Learning Diversity and Inclusion Teachers and School Leaders will be posting pre-recorded videos on KIC Online.

We have postponed the Kindergarten and Year 5 Welcome Evenings as they revolve around parents being on site. Kindergarten families have recently engaged in Orientation Week and information has been sent to Year 5 families electronically.

Covid Update
Thank you to all our families for your vigilance in following our Covid protocols. As you are aware our daily Covid numbers are published on KIC Online. Please note that these figures are for all positive cases reported to the school, whether they have attended campus or not. In the Junior School we will send separate communication to individual Learning Groups if a known positive case has been on site.

Lower Primary Building
Construction of the new lower primary building continues to progress well with more framework being erected this week.

Swimming Trials
The Junior School Division Swimming Trials for students in Upper Primary were held today. Congratulations to all students who nominated for the trials. Everyone tried their best and enjoyed the opportunity.

From the Head of Wellbeing JS

Last year, the Junior School began the process to become a ‘Body Bright’ registered school. Body Bright is a new primary school, evidence-based initiative of the Butterfly Foundation that aims to promote positive body image in all students so they can thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

This year, staff and students will be undertaking a range of Body Bright activities, based on the BRIGHT acronym (Brave, Resilient, Inclusive, Grateful, Happy and Thoughtful), starting with our BRAVE lesson this term. All these areas link in wonderfully with our wellbeing-focused Units of Inquiry and other wellbeing initiatives such as Respectful Relationships and Restorative Practice.

Families also play an important role in helping to promote positive body image in children. You might like to visit the Body Bright Families webpage to access resources that will help you foster healthy attitudes and behaviours towards the body, eating and physical activity, in your home. Safer Internet Day

February 8 marks ‘Safer Internet Day’ across the globe. It is particularly timely as we head into the start of a new school year with new devices to have a conversation with our children. In a recent survey of 8-17 year old’s and their parents, it was interesting to find that face-to-face bullying is still more prevalent than cyberbullying in Australia.  This is despite the proliferation of cyberbullying during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Encouragingly, young people are feeling more empowered to act against negative online experiences.  More concerning was the survey found significant gaps in parents’ awareness of the types of harms children can experience online such as drug taking, suicide, self-harm and unhealthy eating, grisly images, and violent sexual material.   These can be confronting to talk about, but having the conversation to equip parents to support children in a respectful and judgement-free way if this situation arises.

Students will soon be asked to sign the annual KIC ICT User agreement which outlines the expectations here at school.  We encourage all families to develop a family agreement (either formally or informally) as a way to start the conversation around the technologies they use and how they can use them safely.  For more information on family contracts and the recent survey, please go to the esafety commission website.

School TV

Whether it is starting school for the first time, moving up to a higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondary school, there is no doubt that any school transition is a very exciting time for children and parents. It means that the children are growing up!

However, for many it may also be a very anxious and stressful time for both parents and children.

Parents need to be aware of their child’s feelings during any school transition and minimise anxiety, so the process is an enjoyable experience for all. It is important for children to attend transition or orientation programs offered by schools. Familiarisation is often key to reducing stress levels. It is also important for parents to talk to their children about their expectations and being more responsible for their own needs.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
