Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 8 March 2023

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 8 March 2023

From the Principal

Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is Embracing Equity and through this theme helping spread the word about what equity means and the importance of trying to achieve equity for all.

This morning, the College held an International Women’s Day Breakfast. It was a pleasure to see so many students, parents, alumni and staff arrive early at the College Hall to celebrate International Women’s Day and the women in our community. Catered by our wonderful Centrepoint Café staff, the breakfast included a delicious array of breakfast delights and to keep with the purple theme, purple iced doughnuts and cupcakes too.

We took the theme of embracing equity into the technology and STEM realm. As we enjoyed breakfast, we also heard from guest speakers Diana Murase, Director of Technology and Innovation at Kardinia, who emceed the event and Chelsea Hart, from our Marketing team, who discussed her journey into the digital space and embracing your passions.

Alumni Chantelle Hall shared with us some great insights into AI and the world of digital marketing and how important it is that there is representational voice in these areas which means we need more women and diversity in the digital workforce.  Finally, Danielle Flack, our Head of Careers, discussed her Master’s thesis on women in STEM and how and why we should be looking to encourage more girls into Engineering and STEM.

We also had some wonderful musical performances by College students Cookie Robinson and duo Daisy and Delilah. Diana posed a question and a challenge for everyone present to consider three words that describe them positively.  This is not always easy for us to do but it was a great activity. My three words for the event:  empowering, inspiring and uplifting.

A huge thank you to Fiona Russell, Sam Nevin and Kath O’Neill for all their work and preparation of the event.  I am already looking forward to next year’s celebration.

Another exciting community event that is coming up soon is Barefoot Bowls, brought to you by the College Community Council (CCC) on Wednesday 15 March at the Geelong Bowls Club from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Everyone is welcome – beginners, seasoned bowlers and spectators alike. I hope you will be able to attend.  More details and the link to tickets is further down in eNews.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents,

We are now half-way through a very busy term, and in the first five weeks students have overwhelmingly displayed a strong commitment to their studies and to the values of the College community. The participation of all Senior School students in the Founder’s Day celebration at Adventure Park last week was exemplary in every sense. Their interaction with each other and with the younger students from the Junior School was mutually respectful, friendly and supportive. Compliance with the SunSmart policy was close to perfect.

On Friday last week the year seven students participated in a very important PD on positive relationships, ‘Backflips Against Bullying’. The lively presentation, which provided powerful insights into the issue from every perspective, was well received by the students.

Yesterday, year nine students participated in the ‘Future Directions’ seminar, which, as the title suggests, started their thinking about their future careers, the post-secondary education that it may require, and their choice to complete years eleven and twelve via either the Victorian Certificate of Education or the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Parents of students in years eight and nine have been invited to attend an information session covering the same material. It will be held tomorrow night in the Katsumata Centre from 7.30pm. The material covered will also be available online, via a link which will be forwarded to the relevant parents later in the week.

A similar night for parents of students currently in year ten will be held in term three, to assist parents and students to make subject and course choices for year eleven and twelve.

Next week all students in years seven to ten will begin the process of selecting their semester two subjects. Students will be taken through the process during an extended tutor group meeting on 15 March. Further details about the process will be emailed to parents next week.

Chiisai Matsuri (Mini Festival) March 7, 2023

Yesterday the Japanese and Culture Club invited students from years 3-12 to participate and engage in an activity evolved from Setsubun. Setsubun (節分)literally means “seasonal division” and is a festival held on the day before the beginning of spring according to the Japanese lunar calendar. Rituals are held on this day to drive away Oni (ogres) and welcome good fortune. Students from the Senior School placed an Oni mask on their back and were chased by members of the Junior School. Once captured, the winning students exchanged a raffle ticket for a Japanese themed prize. Much fun was had by all! The linked PDF here includes Origami of Hina (dolls) to celebrate Hinamatsuri (Doll’s festival). Next week in the Japanese and Culture Club, we will be doing more of these origami to display in our space. Each term the Japanese and Culture Club will host a Chiisai Matsuri celebrating the seasonal festivals with fun and craft. The Club is run by Senior IB and VCE students, and is available every Tuesday for years 3-12.

ROWING NEWS

State Championship – 4 March 2023
Senior Squads

Another warm and windy day at Nagambie. It was also a birthday celebration for Daisy – Happy Birthday!

The U21/Division 1 crew were up first. They fought hard and rowed incredibly fast, finishing both of their different category finals with the same time. The girls showed great grit and fortitude to push from behind in the last 500m of their U21 race to secure a close, 1 second win in their A Final, earning a 1st place medal.

Our new Doubles crew rowed in their first competition race for Kardinia. The girls held their own, maintaining their pace and position, to finish 2nd in their B Final. They finished their final in good spirits and as a new crew combination, we look forward to seeing them row again at the Head of School Girls Regatta.

At the Nagambie regatta 2 weeks ago our second Senior crew competed in the Div. 5 category. Unfortunately due to rules and regulations for States, they were required to row under Div. 2. Despite the significantly higher level, the girls put in a commendable effort against fast competitors to finish 5th in their B Final. The experience will hold them in good stead for competing in their level for the Head of School Girls Regatta.

All crews showed impressive improvement and determination. Well done!

Results:
Audrey Semjaniv, Eliza Jenkins, Grace Holton, Eliza Dean
Cox: Tash Bogdanovski
Female Under 21 Coxed Quad Scull – A Final – 1st

Congratulations to All Rowers!

Harmony Day at KIC

This year to celebrate Harmony day, we will be creating an e-cookbook of recipes submitted by our diverse College community members. The book will then be shared with the College community on Harmony Day, 21 March 2023.

We have an incredibly rich community of cultures her at KIC, so what better way to celebrate it than by connecting through a delicious treat or meal to share with family and friends.

Over the next few weeks students, staff and families are encouraged to share a favourite recipe (sweet, savoury, or maybe even a drink) that may represent who they are and where they have come from. Recipes will then be reviewed and become part of our 2023 Harmony Day Celebration E-Book Hungry for Harmony. A few selected recipes will also be available to purchase at Centrepoint Café on Harmony Day.

Check out the Wellbeing Hub page on KICOnline for details on how to share your recipe! https://kiconline.kardinia.vic.edu.au/d2l/home/12435 (Please submit your recipe by Monday 13 March).

Please contact Kate Robertson k.robertson@kardinia.vic.edu.au or Katie Self k.self@kardinia.vic.edu.au if you have any questions.

HIGHVIEW KINDERGARTEN AND PRESCHOOL

The following extract, written by Penni Freame and Belinda Russell provides a brief history of Highview Kindergarten and Preschool:

“Our kindergarten program began in February 1996 in the northern end of the Early Learning Centre … The learning spaces and playgrounds were all empty and silent except for the dust, cobwebs and slaters. The inaugural kindergarten staff included Ruth Scholfield-Smith, Liz Goodfellow and Sandy Hutchinson. Anne Lambert, Trish Young and Jackie Luscomb joined us throughout the year…

In 1997 we welcomed Belinda Russell (nee Arnott), who joined our growing team to start the Acorns Kindergarten program in the portable building under the old acorn trees…

It has always been a priority to establish relationships built on trust and respect, so that each child could come to Highview with a sense of security and belonging. Through the relationships we build, we have always provided a very rich program allowing for the emergence of every individuals’ personality: confident leaders, the constrained and reserved, the fearless climber, the theatrical performer and the imaginative creator. Nothing much has changed in our philosophy and beliefs about children since the beginning of Kardinia…

In 2004, a new challenge began as we embraced and introduced the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program to our children’s learning experiences. We found new and exciting insights into the education of our children and have continued to work towards providing authentic, engaging relevant, significant and challenging learning for all learners at Kardinia, including staff, children and families.

The year of 2004 also saw the beginning of architectural plans for a new Kindergarten and Preschool Learning environment. This extensive project took two years of planning and building to be ready for the 2006 families to enjoy. This was planned as part of the 10-year anniversary for the College…”

School TV – Wellbeing Barometer

Last year proved to be yet another challenging year. The ongoing impact of the pandemic, the continuing war in Ukraine, humanitarian crises, the rising cost of living, unprecedented flooding and growing social polarisation and the ever-present threat of climate change, has impacted and overwhelmed many families who are trying to recover, rebuild and adjust to a new kind of “normal”.

Throughout such difficult times, it is important for parents and caregivers continue to build relationships, foster connections, enable understanding and break down barriers as they navigate a pathway towards better mental health and wellbeing for young people.

Therefore, to assist your school, we are seeking your participation in a short survey. It is intended to act as a barometer to help gauge the state of student wellbeing within the community. The information gathered will enable your school to focus on some of the key issues and highlight where further assistance may be required. With mental health concerns on the rise, it is evident that many young people may need some extra support and parents and caregivers play a vital role in enabling a child’s ability to thrive.
