Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 8 February 2023

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 8 February 2023

From the Principal

As I have stopped and spoken to students across the College this week I am really heartened by the positivity with which the students generally respond to my questions about how their week is going and how the start of the school year has been.

Some today told me how happy they were to be back at school, and I believe they were really genuine in their response.

While it is unrealistic to think that all of our students can be happy all of the time, a sense of appreciation from our students for what they have available to them and a willingness to make the most of the opportunities afforded to them through attending our school is something that I do hope we can instil in each of our students every day.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents

On Monday to Wednesday this week the new year seven students have enjoyed their ‘Starting Right Program’ in their respective camps in the Grampians, Lake Emerald and Gembrook. The camps provide both an opportunity to form new friendships and to begin their Outdoor Education experience at KIC.

Yesterday, students in both years eleven and twelve had the opportunity to attend separate Study Skills seminars in the Katsumata Centre. These lively presentations do make a difference to the effectiveness of individual student study habits and ultimately to the grades they achieve in these very important final years of secondary school. Those who participated will reap the benefits at the end of the year.

On Friday this week Senior School students will attend their first House Assemblies, where students in years eight to twelve will be recognised for Outstanding Application in study and for Academic Excellence based on their effort and grades in semester two last year.

Recipients of the Application awards have been recognised by at least four of their semester two subject teachers. The recipients of the Academic Excellence awards achieved grades which placed them in the top five per cent of their year level. These awards are presented each semester. The Academic Excellence Awards may be used to achieve School Colours for Study.

A complete list of the award recipients is presented below.

At the same house assemblies, the program for the first of the House events, the annual House Swimming Carnival, will be outlined. Students have already completed swimming trials and are now keen to participate in the actual event on Tuesday 21 February at the Kardinia Pool in South Geelong.

The House Swimming Carnival, a day when classes will be suspended, is nonetheless a day which students are expected to attend. Other similar days include Founder’s Day, the Prefect and Colours Investiture and the other House Competition Days – Athletics, Cross Country, Music and Debating – and student PD days such as those held for years eleven and twelve this week. These are days which develop and nurture our sense of community, our positive school culture and each student’s personal and academic growth. Attendance on these days is expected of every student as per the enrolment agreement signed by parents.

Congratulations Maria Umbrello
Many of our Junior School families will know Maria Umbrello from the Camp Australia out-of-school-hours care program. Last week Maria reached a milestone with Camp Australia by achieving 15 years of service, 12 of which have been at Kardinia. Congratulations Maria, and thank you for your hard work, care and compassion for our school community.

Car Parking Outside School Grounds
Please be advised that a local resident has raised concerns with the school about parents parking illegally in the streets around Gotemba Drive. Concerns raised include blocking resident driveways and parking on grass footpaths and blocking pedestrian access. Your cooperation in supporting residents is much appreciated. Please note that students are supervised until 3.40pm each day before moving to the office for supervision if needed. If you’re running a bit late, don’t panic as we do have systems in place to help.

The GAC Cafe is open again!

The Goodfellow Aquatic Centre Café will be open from today, Wednesday 8 February 2023.  Opening hours are Monday to Friday 3.30pm – 5.30pm and Saturday 8.30am – 11.30am. Come and enjoy a great coffee and sweets, snacks, toasties, cold drinks and more. Coffee and snacks can also be taken on Pool Deck to enjoy (no glass).

Alumni, parents, staff and senior students are invited to use this facility. EFTPOS, cash or student card facilities are available.

Duke of Edinburgh 2023 Information Night

A parent information session will be held for new participants who are interested in joining the 2023 program on Thursday 9 February, at 7:00pm in the Hall.

Kardinia International College has had a significant number of students participate in the program and receive their Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. The Bronze Award is targeted at Year 9 students (age 14 and above), Silver is targeted at Year 10 students (age 15 and above), and Gold is targeted at Year 11 and 12 students (age 16 and above)

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework, which challenges young people to find their purpose, passion and place in the world. The Award equips and empowers participants to achieve their personal best, learn to take responsibility for goals and choices, become connected to and actively engaged within their community, make a real difference to society through their positive contributions and involvement and learn to persevere and overcome barriers to success.

VCE Season of Excellence

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s annual Season of Excellence and Top Class Performance program showcases the very best student work from the previous years’ Performing Arts  and Visual Arts VCE studies from across a broad range of studies including Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Communications, Media and more.

The Season of Excellence Music concerts will feature students from around the state including our own Tom Meadows (Guitar). Whilst Tom is the only student from Kardinia to be offered a place in the Music concerts to be held at the Melbourne Recital Centre on March 29, we would like to acknowledge the excellent efforts of Jessica Harrison-O’Toole (Contemporary Voice) and Natasha Lim (Piano) who were short listed for the first round of pre-selection due to their extraordinary performance examination results in 2022.

We would also like to congratulate Olivia Conder and Eli Jackson who were also shortlisted for Top Acts, after achieving exceptional results in their VCE VET Music units.

We are thrilled that the Top Class Drama and Dance performances will feature another of Kardinia’s performing arts students, Esther Mathers, who has been invited to perform at the Malthouse Theatre in Top Class Theatre Studies on Wednesday 15 March. She will be presenting her 2022 VCE Monologue Interpretation from ‘Come from Away’ as part of the VCE Season of Excellence.

Finally, our heartfelt congratulations is extended to Ella Hunt for her fine achievement in being shortlisted for the Visual Communication Design Top Design exhibit and to Mikayla Clarke (Media) for being shortlisted for Top Screen for her Year 12 film ‘Calling’.

Kardinia is proud of its Performing Arts and Visual Arts programs and the successes that our students have enjoyed.

Harmony Day at KIC

This year to celebrate Harmony day, we will be creating an e-cookbook of recipes submitted by our diverse College community members. The book will then be shared with the College community on Harmony Day, 21 March 2023.

We have an incredibly rich community of cultures her at KIC, so what better way to celebrate it than by connecting through a delicious treat or meal to share with family and friends.

Over the next few weeks students, staff and families are encouraged to share a favourite recipe (sweet, savoury, or maybe even a drink) that may represent who they are and where they have come from. Recipes will then be reviewed and become part of our 2023 Harmony Day Celebration E-Book Hungry for Harmony. A few selected recipes will also be available to purchase at Centrepoint Café on Harmony Day.

Checkout the Wellbeing Hub page on KICOnline for details on how to share your recipe! https://kiconline.kardinia.vic.edu.au/d2l/home/12435

Co-Curricular News

Our Co-Curricular program is up and running for 2023 and we are excited to be able to start expanding the opportunities we offer our students.

Every activity in College life, be it inside or outside the classroom, plays a significant role in the development of students. Our College Co-Curricular program plays an important part in enhancing the development of the whole student providing a balance between the academic curriculum and the vital learning that occurs beyond the classroom.

After recent COVID impacted years, we welcome back to the program:

  • Tournament of Minds (Junior School)
  • Lego League (Senior School)

And the introduction of some new activities in the Senior School including:

  • Philosophy Club
  • Poetry Appreciation Club
  • the Ethics Olympiad
  • the Shark Tank Program
  • World Scholars Cup
  • Youth Parliament Program

Another evolving element of the Co-Curricular program is the welcoming of external providers to host their activities on College grounds adding convenience to our families. Football Star Academy’s Soccer program, A Game Tennis’s Hotshot Program, Chess in Schools and Judo are some examples of this. We are excited to continue to develop this model so that we can further expand the opportunities we can offer our students.

We are also excited to be rolling out a new initiative this year to further promote students to be active which will involve providing structured training programs to students who are competing in District and GISSA based competitions across some activities.

We are excited about the new year ahead with lots to offer.  Don’t forget we will still have all the old favourites returning!

In the Junior School:

  • JS Committees
  • Choir
  • Just Chilling Club
  • Japanese Culture Club

In the Senior School:

  • Earthcore
  • Social Justice
  • Kaaren Homework Club
  • French/ Japanese Clubs
  • Craft Club

We are looking forward to seeing as many students as possible getting involved in something that’s creative, active or providing service.

To see a list of what’s on offer in the Senior School and who to contact, visit the KICOnline Co-Curricular page.  For Junior School look to the parent information page on KICOnline.

Rowing News

The recent Regatta held on February 4 included experienced regatta rowers and some competing for the first time, in 2 locations with 5 crews. Throw in some winter weather for February and we had an eventful racing day. Our Seniors smashed out another day of successful, medal winning races at, as described by some parents, ‘Lake WINDouree’ in Ballarat. While our Junior and Inter crews contended with wind on the Barwon River. Faced with the challenging weather conditions, crews had to rely on each other, show resilience, determination, and critical thinking skills. Despite the challenges, they all put in an exceptional effort and finished the day, happy and looking forward to the next regatta.

2022 Overdues

Unfortunately many books still remain overdue from Term 4 last year. Last week we did have a number returned due to clean ups at home and will extend the opportunity to do so until the end of this week. Families were emailed details on Monday.

From Week 3, however, any still not returned, will be charged to school accounts as books will need to be replaced.

Judo News

 Judo Victoria Summer Tournament

On Sunday February 5 a few members of the Kardinia Judo Club travelled to Broadmeadows to compete in the first Judo Victoria tournament for 2023. Georgie Nguyen (Silver), Aiden Leonard (Second), Noah Harding (Silver) and Jimmy Gibbs (Silver) all competed well, brushing off the cobwebs from the summer break in a big way, as the club had only been back training for one week! It was a terrific effort on the part of all four members to step on the competition mat for us.

Thanks also go to Airi Tajiri, Shania and Stefan Javni for Scoring and Refereeing. The next tournament is the Melbourne International Open on March 11 and 12.

This year we are starting a program designed to have guest coaches from Japan, and will be starting with our first Japanese coach appearing in weeks three and four. Many thanks go to the Gibbs family for kindly agreeing to host our guest at short notice!  We hope to have many more coaches come and visit this year and beyond. The judo club has indeed started back training and this year has more sessions on offer, anyone who is interested in starting judo, please contact Doug Noack at d.noack@kardinia.vic.edu.au

From the Head of Wellbeing – Junior School

Welcome back to a new school year!

We have lots of exciting initiatives happening within the Junior school relating to Student Wellbeing.

We are working towards developing our student’s social and emotional competencies by explicitly teaching students about their feelings, emotions and social competencies needed within friendships and society. We are making connections to our ‘Who we are’ unit of inquiry (WWA) which runs throughout the entire year. Our WWA unit fosters students’ ability to inquire about themselves and others’ perspectives and how this helps us to understand the world. Learning Diversity and Inclusion (LDI) and Learning Group teachers are making transdisciplinary links to IB- Approaches to Learning (ATL). By developing these approaches to learning we are upskilling KIC students in essential competencies needed to be effective lifelong learners.

Here is an overview of our ATL’s:

To help us to further understand our KIC student community and their social-emotional understandings, I am asking that parents and guardians fill in this nine-question survey. This information provides data to allow KIC staff to gain a greater understanding of what parents and guardians feel about their student’s knowledge and understanding of social-emotional competencies.

Please click on the link below: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=D6srYXEJ1EyCprsDKg94r5Nfbi8tR_ZMgF6RWOLaJE5UQksxMU1NREtMNlZUMlhWRlhWOU1ERTdLNi4u

Work in progress – Under Construction

KIC staff are currently working on a positive way of recognising our wonderful KIC students utilising our school motto of Wisdom, Friendship and Respect.

All classes have been working on developing their class essential agreements. These will align with our school motto:

Wisdom – everyone has the right and responsibility to learn. Learning should be valued and celebrated.

Respect- everyone has the right to feel safe, cared for and valued. They are responsible for being mindful of themselves, others and the world.

Friendship – everyone has the right to belong and is responsible for building positive relationships.

Ask your child/children about their classroom essential agreements and what they mean to them!

“The newly appointed staff would have to work extremely hard to establish systems and procedures that are often taken for granted in established organisations. The site had not been occupied for a year and required a large amount of attention. The secondary teachers would need to teach a variety of areas as well as taking on other roles…kitchens, office areas, the kindergarten play areas and learning areas etc all needed cleaning, resourcing and organising,”

[Reference- Dowie, P. The First Ten Years -1996 to 2005-]

Kardinia International College opened at the beginning of the 1996 school year with Mr John Goodfellow as the inaugural principal. On Thursday 1 February, the 40 secondary students arrived in casual clothes, as the school uniform did not arrive until a week later. The students were allocated into three mixed level Tutor Groups led by Ms Fry, Ms Bard-Brucker & Mr Dowie, and the first year began.

The Official Opening of Kardinia International College was held on April 28 1996, with the Minister of Education, The Honourable Phillip Gude M.P, as the guest of honour. The first student leaders, Paul Rose and Sarah Boyle, were part of the Opening Ceremony, as well as musicians David Kastanek, Danny Goodfellow, Jenna Hildebrand and members of the Choral Ensemble performing at the event. A total of 81 secondary and kindergarten students were listed on the program.

Next week’s article features Mr & Mrs Katsumata.

Website Design and Development

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.

FFor many of the projects and class incursions at the college we’ve sort the help and expertise of Giraffe and Elf Design and development. You can find out more information on design and development at Giraffe and Elf by visiting Giraffe and Elf, Design and Development
