Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 5 October 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 5 October 2022

From the Deputy Principal

The news across Victoria regarding Covid-19 infections continues to improve. The graph below illustrates the strong downward trend we saw in reported cases at our College last term.

We are currently waiting for updated directives from the Dept of Education and the Dept of Health. The media have reported the end of isolation periods later this month. We are waiting for directives for schools. Currently the expectation is that parents continue to report positive student Covid cases to the school. It remains prudent for those students and staff who are ill and suffering symptoms to stay away from school and recover. Where students are close contacts, the wearing of masks remains an important tool in protecting others. We will keep you updated as information becomes available.

Late last term our school community participated in the LEAD survey program run by Independent Schools Victoria (ISV). We thank the many parents, students and staff who completed the survey. These surveys are collated by ISV. Early next year we will have important data provided to us through the analysis of the survey. College leadership will use this information to continue to improve the education we provide our students and we will use this feedback to build a stronger sense of school community.

A big congratulations to the students who have been elected as Prefects for 2023. Their names are listed in the Head of Senior School section below. We have great faith in these students modelling the attributes of a Kardinia student and further building our Kardinia community as they serve as role models for each of us.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents,

This week we welcomed several ‘new’ staff members. Alex Popovic and Nick Higginson have both returned for a further short, but very much appreciated stay, replacing Lesly Windle and Kim Johnston who are on leave. We also welcomed back Cecily Curran, who returns after maternity leave.

Earlier this week, the process of appointing the prefects for 2023 was completed. The new prefects are:

College Captains: Jack Holton and Emma Borschmann

Sport Captain: Darcy Giddings

Performing Arts:  Esther Mathers

House Captains

Cowie: Tara Shaw and Angus Ayerbe

Gotemba: Elias Walton and Isobel McLeod

Morongo: Issy Carland and Ashton Phillips

Thomson: Stephanie Reade and Xavier Lee

The current prefects will handover to their successors during a Senior School Assembly next week. The new prefects will be invested by the Principal during the Prefect and Colours Investiture early in the new year.

During this week, 76 year nine and ten students and nine staff members are participating in an outdoor ed program at Culture College in the Northern Territory. The program provides a short, but viable alternative to the Chiang Mai program which has been temporarily cancelled due to COVID restrictions. In 2023 when the Chiang Mai campus re-opens there will continue to be other options within Australia.

As per our SunSmart policy all students must wear the wide brim College hat at recess and lunchtime when outside a classroom or other building. Year 12 students may wear an alternative wide brim hat.

From the Head of Junior School

Family Breakfast
Thank you to the KIC Connect team for organising the family breakfast on the last day of Term 3. It was a great event and wonderful to see our community come together after a few years of isolation. Thank you to all those who attended and for making the day so special.

Grove Market Stall
The Grove market stall will be open again this Friday from 8.30am. There will be 40 dozen eggs for sale and lots of beautiful fresh heads of lettuce. Cash only!

Car Park
Thank you to all families who are adhering to our car park rules. For those families new to the school recently, here are some important things to note:

  • All families should use the Junior School Car Park off Gotemba Road only. Junior School parents should not be entering the school via Ballarat Road unless they have children in the Senior School as well.
  • Please remain in your car if you choose to use the pick-up zone at the end of the school day. This space is designed for quick transitions. If you need to leave your car, please find an alternate space to park.
  • Families are permitted to park on the streets nearby, but please be mindful that you are not blocking residents’ driveways, parking illegally or causing a traffic hazard.

You may also like to watch our original video explaining how the car park functions.

Withdrawal from the College

If you are planning on withdrawing your child from the College, one full term’s notice in writing is required, or one term’s fee in lieu of such notice is payable. For example, notice given in Week 2 of Term 4 will require fees to be paid up to and including Week 2 of Term 1 the following year. Please email marketing@kardinia.vic.edu.au with any questions or if you are planning to withdraw your child from the College at the end of the year. Thank you.

From the Archives

The Founder Dining Hall and Kitchen block was established at Morongo Presbyterian Girls’ College in 1960. Personalised crockery, cutlery and napkin rings in the Archives, reflect the details enjoyed during mealtimes by the Morongo boarders.

The original building formed the basis of Kardinia International College’s learning spaces from 1996; however, a significant extension was added, with The School of Performing Arts (SPA) officially opened on May 19, 2004. This new facility included music ensemble, drama performance and dance studios, instrumental rooms, storage facilities, student bathrooms and change rooms, and staff facilities. In its first year, the new space was fully engaged with the rehearsal of the 2004 College Production, ‘The Wizard of Oz’. It continues to be a hive of activity and sound.

School TV – Online Gaming

Young people might have a lot of fun playing online games, but parents and carers need to make sure they empower their child to make wise decisions and help them manage the risks. Numerous games can help your child become more coordinated, adept at problem-solving and multitasking, and help them develop social skills through online interaction with other players. However, it’s also critical to comprehend what may go wrong and what might be harmful to your child. Carers need to play an active role in understanding and being aware of what their young person is playing online and who they are interacting with.
