Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 30 March 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 30 March 2022

From the Principal

I have just returned from a visit out to the Grove. How blessed we are to have such a wonderful facility as part of our College. The staff and students out at the Grove do such a great job creating an immersive learning environment.

The students who showed me around were able to tell me so much about the activities out at the Grove; from explaining the workings of the Aquaponic system, the maturation cycle of their chickens and how they would soon be laying eggs and how the hot house was helping the new plants grow and thrive before they were moved out and ready for the outside gardens.

I also saw some very impressive looking vegetables and met some of the gorgeous four-legged residents.

From the Head of Senior School

Celebrating ‘Bullying No Way Day’, ‘Harmony Day’ and ‘Cultural Diversity Week’ in the Junior School

This week the Junior School promoted the theme of ‘kindness’ by celebrating the events of Bullying No Way Day, Harmony Day and Cultural Diversity Week. The International Mindedness and Student Action Committees along with other Year 6 students documented what kindness means by photographing and interviewing students, and videoing students speaking in languages such as, Auslan, French, and Italian. Students have enjoyed participating in fun lunchtime activities such as, ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ and recognising the diversity within our college community.

A big thank you to Mynott Sensei for organising and promoting the event.

A Message from Year 6 Students
As a part of the ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry, Year 6 students had the opportunity to meet the Honorable Richard Marles when he visited the College today.  Richard Marles is the Deputy Opposition leader. He also holds the title of Shadow Minister for Reconstruction as well as being the local representative for Corio.  This experience was very positive as it reaffirmed our learning and helped the students understand how the Australian government is run in more detail. Richard was very impressed with how knowledgeable we were. We look forward to applying this information to our unit inquiries and summative assessment task shortly.

Upper Primary Cross Country
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Upper Primary Cross Country event held at the Barwon River on Monday. All students performed their best and gave it everything. Thank you to all the parent volunteers and spectators who helped create a great atmosphere for our students on the day. Thank you also to Mr Russell for organising such a great event. Even the weather was perfect! Well done to Morongo who were crowned winners.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Please be reminded that this Friday 1 April is a student free day while Parent Teacher interviews are conducted. All K-12 students also have an early dismissal on Tuesday 5 April. Students in Kindergarten will be dismissed at 12.45pm and students from FY-Y12 at 12.50pm. Buses will run as normal but will depart at 1.00pm and 1.05pm.

Co-Curricular News

Just Chilling Club is a supervised structure play program for Lower Primary Students to assist them in the development of positive peer relationships and social skills.  It is open to all students from foundation to Year 2.  It is ran by lower primary teachers who volunteer their time at lunch to support various activities across the week and supported by year 6 students from the JAMJARS Committee:

Monday : Fine Motor such as loom bands, beading, cutting and playdough
Tuesday: Mindfulness in the Garden
Wednesday : Mindful Art
Thursday : Pause, Imagine, Create
Friday : Lego Masters

The program provides opportunities for our lower and upper primary students become more socially aware of others and improve their listening, communication and interpersonal skills.  With the support of upper primary students and teachers, lower primary students can learn how to appreciate different perspectives,  self-manage and become better collaborators in a fun and supportive environment.

Earlier in the week we interviewed some of the Just Chilling students:

How often do you come to Just Chilling?
“We come every day of the week!”
“All the time!”

What do you like about Just Chilling?
“It’s fun!”
“It’s quieter than out on the playground.”
“We like to chill and it’s fun!”
“We love making and drawing things.”

Kardinia Judo Club Belt Gradings

On Sunday the 27th of March the judo club held its first belt grading test day in two very long years. It was a truly marvellous day, with 36 club members earning a new coloured belt. Following the grading tests, the members enjoyed a judo workshop, before heading over to the Centrepoint Café where the parents had made an early start on the BBQ lunch. The weather was perfect for a BBQ, which was an idyllic finish to a very productive morning’s judo.

School TV – Vaping

Over recent months, there has been a growing concern about the impending epidemic affecting young people in relation to the use of e-cigarettes and the trendy pastime of vaping. As this activity grows in popularity, most teenagers are unaware of the associated risks and the potential impact vaping can have on their development and overall health.

Vaping is the act of inhaling a vapour created by an electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette. Although vaping is often marketed as being the “healthy” alternative to smoking, doctors advise that if you do not smoke, then you should not start vaping. Although vaping products are infused with enticing flavours, many contain high levels of nicotine as well as other chemicals and additives, that when inhaled, can cause severe damage to the lungs.

Australia has strict regulations in place for nicotine-containing products and despite it being illegal to use, sell or buy nicotine for use in e-cigarettes, users are purchasing these products through other avenues. A recent Australian study of chemically flavoured liquids used in e-cigarettes which are available here for purchase over the counter, has confirmed concerns about their safety and respiratory health impact. Attempts are being made to regulate vaping and ban the importation of vape products containing nicotine. Unfortunately, manufacturers are developing vaping devices that are cheaper and easier to hide than conventional cigarettes, making it more attractive and cost-effective for impressionable young people.

Website Design and Development

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
