Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 3 November 2021

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 3 November 2021

From the Principal

Tonight, our Year 6 students celebrate their PYP Exhibition in a virtual format.  It is the culmination of months of research and effort from our Year 6s and a celebration of the students concluding the Primary Years Program. I am always amazed by the level of knowledge and quality of work that these young people can produce, and this year is no exception.

At the same time, another momentous milestone is occurring with our Year 12 students commencing their examinations last week. The resilience of these Year 12 students is remarkable, and I want them all to know how very proud we are of them.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents & Students,

We would like to congratulate Greta Cuthell on being chosen as the recipient of the 2021 Deakin Young Influencer Award for her outstanding efforts in relation to the environment. This award is open to all Year 11 students and Greta was selected as Kardinia International College’s winner, which is an incredible achievement. The Deakin Young Influencer Award recognises excellence and celebrates students who are truly motivated to make a positive difference in the world – now and into the future. The University has rewarded Greta’s efforts and achievements with a $5000 scholarship to support her first year of study at Deakin in 2023.

Earlier this week year 10 students enjoyed a leadership seminar. At the conclusion they had the opportunity to nominate for the very important role of Peer Support Leader. Successful nominees will assist year 7 students joining the College next year to make a smooth transition to secondary school. They will play a vital role in helping them to understand and appreciate the important values which our community shares and practises.

Yesterday students were invited to apply for school colours, which are awarded annually in recognition of a student’s achievement or contribution in study, sport, the Arts, debating and community service. In practice only students in years 9-12 will be eligible, but awareness will encourage younger students to aspire to achieve colours in the future.

Not withstanding the recent reduction in COVID-19 restrictions the following protocols still apply on the College campus:

  • Masks must be carried at all times;
  • Masks must be worn on buses/trains;
  • Masks must be worn inside and when social distancing is not possible outside;
  • Desks must be sanitised at the start of every class;
  • Sharing food and equipment is not permitted.

From the Head of Junior School

With the easing of some restrictions, our Year 5 students enjoyed a canoe adventure this week on the Barwon River.

The conditions were perfect and a great time was had by all involved.

Book Week

Book Week is off to a flying start, with author visits on Monday, lunch time activities every day, and the Dress Up Day today. Thanks Mrs Bowman for all of your hard work in ensuring we eventually managed to celebrate this week together.

PYP Exhibition

Tonight is an exciting night for our Year 6 students and their families as they enjoy the PYP Exhibition. The PYP Exhibition is a collaborative unit of inquiry that is driven by the passions of the students and leads to action. The learning journey, findings and actions will be shared online through a virtual gallery. This unit is the culmination of the primary years journey and a significant milestone in the life of a primary school student. Good luck to all students involved and thank you to all staff who have supported our Year 6 students not only throughout this unit of inquiry, but all throughout their primary school years.

Lower Primary Athletics Day

This exciting event will be held next Wednesday 10 November.  Further information about the venue and parent involvement will be shared with parents in the coming days.

College Photos

College photos are scheduled for Week 7 this term. Further information will be shared to all parents soon.

The Victoria Cross

The grandfather of Stephanie Boyd (Year 11) and Olivia Boyd (Year 9), Mr Geoffrey Miles attended the College today.

After learning of Olivia’s studies of the Great War, Mr Miles arranged for Mrs Lockhart to be presented with a copy of the winners of the Victoria Cross.

We thank Mr Miles and his RSL branch for generously donating this resource to the College.

Library Services News

Book Week finally took place this week and the Junior school was able to celebrate “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds together”. Our “virtual” author was Zeno Sworder who won the CBCA Award for New Illustrator this year. Find out more about Zeno here. Hear Zeno read This Small Blue Dot.

The Learning Groups were able to conduct their own mini parades which were so much fun. We loved seeing the amazing and vibrant costumes, I even found another Peacock girl! A Year Two student asked me if Mrs Bowman made her own costume – and yes she did! The helmet, complete with lights was created by paper mâché. Highview students loved how she matched the photo booth display.

All the Learning Groups loved the activities on offer both during class and lunchtimes. We crafted camping scenes, made Pig Poppers, played book golf and created aliens and birds.

With the greatest sigh of relief we could celebrate together – thank you parents and teachers for supporting us.

Mrs Juros (Library Services Manager) and Mrs Bowman (Junior School Librarian).

College Photos

College photos will take place on Monday 15, Thursday 18, and Friday 19 November.

A friendly reminder to please ensure your child’s uniform is clean and tidy.

Squid Game Warning

We are aware that a number of our students have reported watching the Netflix series Squid Game.

There are significant concerns about anyone under the age of 18 watching this series.

From the Head of Wellbeing – Junior School

This week I’d like to share the Action for Happiness “New Ways November” calendar:

“Learning something new or getting involved in an activity that really absorbs and interests us is great for our wellbeing. Keeping our brains active is not only good for us physically but it can help you feel you are flourishing as you see yourself make progress with a new skill, or just make you smile as you make a mess and decide to start again. :)  Being playful and trying new things is important, as is remembering that it’s OK not to get it right first time – change “I can’t do it”, into “I can’t do it…yet!” This month’s calendar is full of ideas to help you decide what to try next.”

School TV

A child can form an opinion of their own body at a very young age. Research suggests that children as young as three years old can have body image issues, and there are many things that influence them. Parents play a critical role in helping children develop a positive body image.

Today’s media can negatively influence our young people on what is the “ideal” body shape and size. The problem is, a “perfect” body doesn’t really exist. Although body image issues are mostly associated with girls, boys are also affected. A negative body image can trigger eating disorders in some children and parents need to be aware of the signs. Their child’s eating habits and language around appearance can be an indicator. Parents and teachers need to help kids understand that appearance does not equate to an individual’s health or success.

Website Design and Development

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
