Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 27 July 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 27 July 2022

From the Principal

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending the Premier’s VCE 2021 award ceremony where two of our recent graduates (Class of 2021) Hong Anh (Louise) Pham and Rory Clarke, as well as our current 2022 College Captain, Jesse McDougall received awards. It was wonderful to be able to share the celebration of these student’s success with them, their parents and their teachers Mrs Armes, Mrs Armstead and Mr D’Arcy.

Both the new Minister for Education, The Hon Natalie Hutchins and the Governor of Victoria, The Hon Linda Dessau were in attendance. I was particularly struck by the speech given by the Governor in which she congratulated the students for their achievements, but also went on to remind them that their ATARs (even really great ones) do not define them and that very quickly those grades will mean very little. Instead, to paraphrase the Governor she spoke about what will really define them was:

The hard work and effort they put into their studies and if they continue to apply that in other fields of endeavour and work and their willingness to acknowledge others that have helped and supported them along the way. Recognising that even great individual efforts usually have a team behind them.

She also went on to flag with the awardees that it was also highly likely that they would experience failures along the way, as well, and it was how they were able to embrace the learning from those less than positive experiences and grow from them, that would define them much more, than a single mark in a point in time.

I felt that this poignant message from such a highly successful leader was worthwhile sharing with our wider school community. It speaks to the efforts we are making with our Strategic Plan to ensure that our students graduate, knowing that they are so much more than their ATAR and having the skills and language to be able to communicate all the other ways they are capable and accomplished.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents,

Yesterday Year 10 students participated in a half day seminar related to future career and course planning. They gained very useful insights into post-secondary school options from both our Head of Careers, Danielle Flack, and several of the College alumni who generously supported the event. The seminar was the first step in the process of making two very important decisions: the choice to complete Year 11 and 12 as a VCE or an IB student and the subjects to pursue in either course. Subject selections will partly depend on the career and further study options.  Over the coming weeks, Year 10 students will receive further support from the College staff as they work their way through these important decisions.

On Thursday, tomorrow, parents of Year 10 students will have the opportunity to join a presentation on post-secondary options and the Year 10 to Year 11 course and subject selection process. They will receive a link to the presentation in a separate email.

Tomorrow and Friday all senior students will have their annual photos taken both in tutor group and individually. Students will only be photographed if they are in full school uniform. If your child has a physical education class on either day it will be necessary to change in and out of the physical education uniform for the photo.

Regards

Geoff Woolard

Three students have received the Premier’s VCE Award

We would like to congratulate Hong Anh Pham, Jesse McDougall, and Rory Clark for being awarded the highest accolade in Victoria for VCE students, the Premier’s VCE Award.
This prestigious award is presented to the highest VCE achievers in the state and is an absolutely incredible achievement. Recipients of this award have shown outstanding dedication, perseverance, and excellence throughout their VCE studies.

Careers News

Dear Parents of students in Years 10 and 11,

As many of you might be aware, the Tasmanian Ferry The Spirit of Tasmania will disembark from Geelong as from Spring 2022. Coinciding with this, the Victorian Regional Channels Authority is offering a series of workshops and educational activities to students interested in exploring the many career pathways available through the ports authority.

In addition to the pathways associated with transport and transport logistics, the authority is keen to showcase to students the many careers in science, engineering, agriculture,  building, marine biology and manufacturing (to name but a few) that are available and which will continue to grow within the Geelong area.

Kardinia International College has been offered the opportunity to take a group of students on an explorative excursion in which these and other careers will be discussed on Tuesday 30 August. As we have been capped at 20 students, it will be on a first in first served basis. Please share and discuss this information with your students and encourage them to apply if interested as soon as applications open on Friday 29 July. Expressions of interest will open on Friday 29 July and close on Monday 1 August.

For further information about the field trip including areas of employment, please copy the link below into your internet browser. Further information can be obtained by contacting me at: M.pohlenz@kardinia.vic.edu.au.

Judo News

Judo Club – First Judo Victoria Tournament July 2022

On Sunday July 24, 5 members of the Kardinia Judo Club travelled to the Broadmeadows Aquatic Centre to compete in the Judo Victoria tournament held in celebration of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Our usual representatives, Jules Aiberti and Jimmy Gibbs both fought and comfortably won Gold medals in their age and weight groups. Shania Javni fought valiantly for the first time since COVID disruptions and put on a good show. Marlee Keirl fought very well against two very skilled opponents, both fresh from the recent National Championships on the Gold Coast, gaining some valuable experience. Dylan Keirl fought very well and ended up coming home with a Gold Medal, which was a bonus on top of getting some experience at the Judo Victoria tournament level.

The next tournament for the club will be the Bendigo Open on Sunday August 14th, we’re hoping to get some more of our team on the mat!

Volunteer Support

Prior to COVID, our College was well supported by a network of very generous volunteers and parent helpers from within our College community (parents, guardians, grandparents, and others). We are again looking to re-establish this network to provide opportunities to build connection, community engagement and participation at the College.

Two areas we are looking for volunteers to support our existing staff are our Centrepoint Canteen and Crossing Supervisor. A brief overview and contact details for each are provided below.

All volunteers require a current ‘volunteer working with children check’. In line with the Occupational Health and Safety Amendment (COVID-19 Vaccination Information) Regulations 2022, the College has made the decision to temporarily uphold the previous conditions associated with the Victorian Government’s vaccination mandate. Therefore, all Kardinia employees, volunteers and contractors are expected to be fully vaccinated (including 3rd dose booster for 18yo and over) with an approved Covid-19 vaccine, unless a valid medical exemption applies.

Centrepoint Canteen

If you can spare any time to join our network and help prepare and serve food at our canteen, we would very much appreciate it. The work is easy and fun and includes a brief induction and on-the-job training.

You can dedicate as much or as little time as you like. We have short shifts of two hours (12:00pm to 2:00pm) and long shifts of four hours (10:00am to 2:00pm) available.

All volunteers’ efforts are rewarded with a healthy lunch and plenty of tea or coffee.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact me via phone, email, or drop into the canteen for a chat!

Many thanks,
Sam Nevin, Canteen Manager

Crossing Supervisor

The College Crossing Supervisor provides traffic management to ensure the safety of students and other pedestrians at the Ballarat Road crossing within our College grounds. The crossing is supervised from 8.30am – 9am and 3.15pm to 3.45pm each school day and can be supported by any number of generous volunteers.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact me via phone or email.

All volunteers are rewarded with a cup of tea, coffee, or muffin.

Many thanks,
Nicole Trotter, College Reception and Bus Coordinator

Upcoming Documentary

COMING TO THE KIC COMMUNITY THIS TERM!

iNDIEFLIX Shines the Light on Anxiety with this Must-See Documentary:

“ANGST: RAISING AWARENESS AROUND ANXIETY”

ANGST will be available for the KIC Community to watch from 15 – 21 August, with an online panel session on Wednesday 17 August at 7pm.

What is the difference between “being anxious” and having an anxiety disorder? What can we do about the 634% rise in use of Mental Health America’s online tool for anxiety since the start of Covid-19? Why is there still so much fear and stigma in just talking to others instead of hiding online? What can each of us do to make it better and best engage in a full and happy life?

Angst is on a mission: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. The documentary delves into all aspects of our society’s most common mental health challenge with:

  • Candid interviews with kids and teens, who discuss their anxiety, its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope
  • Expert perspectives, (from institutions such as Stanford University, Child Mind Institute), who talk about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects and resources to help
  • Tips, tricks and strategies to help reset thinking patterns, push back against anxiety and support others
  • Awareness that anyone can be touched by – and overcome – anxiety, via a unique and revealing interview with mental health advocate Michael Phelps, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.

“I think this is the single most important mental health film I have seen in my lifetime. I think that every single school in Australia should have this as a mandatory viewing.”
Michael Carr-Gregg (Adolescent Psychologist and leading authority on teenage behaviour).

School TV – Happiness and Gratitude

Happiness is defined as the balance of positive and negative emotions, combined with overall life satisfaction. Happiness and gratitude have been studied in positive psychology for many years and researchers have found that gratitude is always strongly associated with greater happiness. Although everyone has their own definition of happiness, many of us want to feel more positive emotions than negative ones. However, negative emotions are still important. They have a lot to teach us and alert us when things need to change. Practising gratitude helps people feel more of the positive emotions, enable us to relish good experiences, improve our overall health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.
