Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 26 October 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 26 October 2022

From the Principal

Today our Year 12 VCE students commenced exams, starting with English. For the students right now, these examinations are very important. They represent a final chance to demonstrate how well they have learned and understood the curriculum for their chosen subjects. For many, the results of the examinations and the subsequent ATAR score are also very significant in determining the subject offers they receive for university.

To balance the importance of these exams I think it is also worth remembering that there is so much that an examination does not measure and does not report on. It does not show how kind and caring a student was to a peer in a time of need. It does not show the challenges and obstacles a student faced on a daily basis.

It does not show how the respectful manner in which a student interacted with members of the public was noticed by a local business person who employs young people and will now put Kardinia students high on their list. It does not show how the student has developed empathy and intercultural understanding and is choosing to make a positive difference in their world.

My list could go on, but the point is, while these examinations right now are extremely important and the students and their teachers have worked really hard to get to the point where the students can do their very best, there is also so much more that demonstrates our young people’s worth at the end of the day.

We should never forget to acknowledge, develop and celebrate the skills and attributes that cannot be measured in an end of year examination.

From the Head of Junior School

Casual Clothes Day This Friday
Harry and Joel’s Year 6 PYP Exhibition action is to do a gold coin donation and casual dress day, with all of the money going to the WWF corporation. This will be with a touch of green in your clothes. If you come in casual clothes please bring a gold coin donation. This will be on Friday 28 October.

Health Update
While there is no expectation to report COVID-19 cases anymore, I wanted to inform parents that I am aware of a growing number of cases amongst students and staff in the Junior School. There have also been increasing cases of other illnesses reported, such as gastro and the common cold. Thank you to all of our families for keeping children home when unwell and reporting this to the school. We have several students and adults in our community with compromised immune systems and the information shared helps us to keep them safe.

Western Metropolitan Region Track and Field Championships
Congratulations to all students who competed at the Regional Championships last week. In a fantastic result, our ’10 and Under’ Boys Relay team placed 2nd in the final and qualified for the SSV State Primary Track and Field Championships on November 2 at Lakeside Stadium, Melbourne. What a great achievement.

Year 6’s Take Action – A message from Josh, Jordan, Scarlett, Hussain and Yoseph
Yesterday the Kardinia Year 6 students cooperated in building Solar Buddy lights as part of their PYP Exhibition action. Solar lights will now be distributed across the globe to people who are most vulnerable and in need. After this extraordinary change these amazing kids will now be able to read and study after dark, but most importantly feel safe in their own home. To everyone who donated we could not have completed this action without your help and generosity so to you we say thank you.

Save the Date – Junior School Disco – Friday November 4
KIC Connect are hosting a Junior School Disco on Friday 4 November from 5.30pm-7.30pm. Junior School students are invited to attend under the supervision of their parents for a fun-filled evening of dancing. Library Services News

This week in the Inquiry Centre, students participated in a Halloween Scavenger Hunt. They used clues to find books located around the shelves.

Being able to use the catalogue and locate sources are important skills when researching and are transferable to other libraries.

School TV – Safe Partying

Celebrations, partying and socialising are a fundamental rite of passage and one of the most important aspects of a young person’s life. Although the prospect might seem somewhat daunting or even terrifying for parents and caregivers, keeping young people safe can often be a compromise and a challenge.

Your son or daughter may appear to be physically large and mature, but this is not necessarily matched by their emotional maturity and responsibility in behaviour. Most young people try to do the right thing most of the time, but your leadership as a caregiver is crucial. Ensure you are a good role model and discuss your personal views on drug and alcohol use. Your attitude towards addictive substances can have an enormous influence on the way your teenager approaches their own use.

Hosting a celebration at home or at a venue for your teenager can be a fun and memorable event. It all comes down to careful planning. It is important to agree on the ground rules well before your event is announced to ensure there are no misunderstandings later on. As the host you owe your guests a ‘duty-of-care’ and therefore should take all reasonable steps to ensure everyone attending the party is kept safe. Every party has the potential to get out-of-hand, as sometimes it’s hard for young partygoers to make good decisions. Communication and regular discussions are vital, particularly because young people are often faced with peer pressure to do things they prefer not to engage in.

Website Design and Development

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
