Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 24 November 2021

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 24 November 2021

From the Principal

Last week we had the opportunity to farewell our Year 12 students with their official Graduation on Thursday and their Graduation Dinner on Friday. Both events were very special, and I was so grateful that they went off without a hitch.

There were so many highlights and memorable moments but the one that will stay with me was the Parents’ Guard of Honour which both surprised and delighted our Year 12’s as they left the Katsumata Centre. The applause for the Year 12’s was amazing and a great acknowledgement of all that they have achieved under very trying circumstances. I take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the organisation and presentation of both events. I also want to give a special thank you to Maree Robertson and her family who undertook the task of transforming Centrepoint into a function venue that looked like it had come straight out of Vogue.

Today the circle continues as we welcome all our new students and in particular our new Year 7’s into the Senior School. The look of excitement and anticipation on their faces this morning was wonderful to see and I hope that by the time they leave us in Year 12, they have a myriad of great memories and an abundance of knowledge and wisdom.

From the Head of Junior School

Lower Primary Athletics Day
Congratulations to all students who competed in Lower Primary Athletics Day last Wednesday. The weather was finally kind to us, and a great day was enjoyed by everyone. Congratulations to Gotemba for their overall win on the day.

2022 Junior School Leaders
Recently, Year 5 students engaged in a process to elect Year 6 student leaders for 2022. Well done to all students who put themselves forward for selection. The calibre of applicants each year is extremely high and this year has been no exception.

Busking Week
I have enjoyed some wonderful busking in the Junior School this week. Our Performing Arts Leaders and our wonderful Music department have organised a range of musical performances at lunch time outside the Inquiry Centre each day this week. What a treat we’ve had!

Swimming Carnivals
On Friday this week our Year 3 and 4 students will compete in the Middle Primary House Swimming Carnival at the Goodfellow Aquatic Centre. This is always a fun day with a mix of competitive and novelty events. The Upper Primary carnival is to be held the following Friday.

Orientation Day
Next Wednesday December 1 is Orientation Day in the Junior School. On this day students will get to meet their teachers and classmates for 2022 and will spend the morning together. All students will take home an envelope containing the following items:

  • Photos and names of the 2022 Learning Group
  • FY-Y6 Staff for 2022
  • A welcome letter from the Learning Group teacher
  • A ‘Looking Forward to Next Year’ form

A Message from the Student Action Committee
The SAC would like to support a proposal by some Year 6 and Year 2 students to raise money for endangered animals. They have organised a casual clothes day this Friday with the theme ‘a touch of green’ for the cost of a gold coin donation. This day does overlap with the Middle Primary House Swimming Carnival, so please keep this in mind when planning clothes for the day for Year 3 and 4 students.

Kindergarten News
Yesterday our Highview students were visited by Councillor Sarah Mansfield from City of Greater Geelong to discuss sustainability, as well as sustainable practices that can be undertaken in the classroom and at home, such as organic waste disposal, recycling and using clean food packaging.

In other exciting news, our Buttercup group were interviewed by Pulse Radio this week about the amazing sustainability initiatives they’re involved in as part of their unit of inquiry. The interview will be part of a podcast to be published soon.

Judo News

It hasn’t been a big year for celebrations in the Judo Club, but we have received a tremendous bit of news this week. Jules Aiberti has followed in his brother’s footsteps, winning selection to the Australian Cadet (u/18) Squad for 2022. This is a tremendous honour, particularly given that Jules was unable to compete in the National Championships in June. His impressive start to the year, winning medals in the ACT Open and Sydney International Open in his first year in Cadets, combined with his excellent work ethic and visible potential obviously swayed the National Selectors in his favour.

Jules is not only a tremendous judo athlete, he is also known across Australia as a respectful, polite and friendly judoka. He is the epitome of what a judoka should be, and I couldn’t think of a finer role model for our younger judo club members. Jules has had a great sparring partner at the club in Jimmy Gibbs, who although two years his junior has shown a lot of courage and resilience in long randori sessions with Jules. Jimmy is himself poised to enjoy some success in inter-state tournaments next year. Barring set-backs like injuries or global pandemics, Jules is in a very good position to aim to represent Australia at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, perhaps even the 2028 Olympics as well. Congratulations Jules on your selection, and good luck in the international tournaments next year!

School TV

In today’s world, it is becoming apparent that some young people are being influenced by the language around them. It is becoming more common for them to hear derogatory terms or offensive language on the streets, on social media channels, streaming services and in some forms of modern music. Proliferating the use of such language can sometimes normalise, glamorise and sanitise their impact, taking their meaning out of context. Words can be misconstrued to be hurtful, racist, homophobic, misogynistic or even discriminatory. Using disrespectful language is considered socially unacceptable, and if not addressed early, can become a serious problem.

The use of derogatory language or the act of swearing at someone, or about someone, is actually a form of verbal violence. It transgresses the usual rules of social interaction by impinging on an individual’s self-image and sense of dignity. Therefore, many schools enforce a zero tolerance policy when it comes to such language. Parents and carers also need to play an important role in enforcing this approach by proactively monitoring what their children are viewing or being exposed to and discussing the use of words or their origin. This can help prevent inappropriate or disrespectful language being used in the classroom, school yard or other situations.

Whilst some students may use swearing or derogatory terms for attention seeking purposes, others may use it simply because they are still learning how to moderate their language. As young people develop their language skills, it is important for them to have a clear understanding of the impact of their choice of words on others and how their words can impact other people’s perspective of them – an important and essential skill to learn as they progress in their personal and professional development.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
