Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 24 August 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 24 August 2022

From the Principal

By now, all our families will have received a reminder for yet another survey to undertake for us.  This time it is the annual LEAD survey.

No doubt it probably feels like you just filled this in a couple of months ago, but the time has come around quickly to do it once again. I can assure you that the time you take on these surveys is not wasted. We do use the information from our community to inform where we can improve, to celebrate what we do well and to track all areas of our school for trends over the years. Your voice matters and I do hope that you will take the time to let us know what you love about our school and where you think we can do better.

On another note, I was delighted with the response we had on the call for community members to be part of our College Community Council (CCC). We have had more nominations than places on the committee so later this week you will be asked for your vote on who you would like to see on the CCC. Again, your voice matters, as these people will be helping to organise community activities that engage our families and bring us closer together (an area that as been indicated on surveys as something we can improve upon).

Thank you in anticipation of your time and participation in both activities.

I promise I will not give you any homework next week.

From the Head of Junior School

Student Led Conferences
Bookings are now open for the upcoming Student Led Conferences (SLCs). The SLCs will be held on Tuesday 13 September from 1.30pm onwards. All students will be dismissed early on this day, with Kindergarten finishing at 12.45pm and all other students at 12.50pm. Buses will depart at 1.00pm and 1.05pm. After school care is available from 12.45pm with Camp Australia.

For further information about the SLCs, please refer to communication sent by Deputy Head of Junior School and PYP Coordinator, Geoff Geddes.

Book Week
Book Week has been a big hit with students and staff alike this week. Activities at lunchtime have proved popular for students, as has today’s dress-up day.

Grove Market Stall
Each Friday Grove students take turns running a market stall from 8.30-8.50am in front of Highview. Assorted products are available each week with new products added regularly. The students look forward to seeing you again this Friday!

Planeteers Student Committee Fundraiser

From the JS Maths Coordinator
This year has been an exciting year for some new Maths initiatives in the Junior School. This week all Learning Groups were treated to a live performance of ‘The Maths Mindset Show’. This performance helped to reinforce the emphasis on a growth mindset in Maths education that we promote through our Junior School Maths Program. Students can share their learning about the importance of effort, persistence and avoiding a fixed mindset to thrive as mathematicians.

Other exciting initiatives around Maths in the Junior School include the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiad, the Upper Primary Maths Extension Group and a similar group starting up in Lower Primary with a focus on extending Number Sense in our younger students. These programs along with the outstanding learning engagements across the Junior School aim to reinforce the importance of targeting the ‘Stretch Zone’ to get the most out of all Junior School Mathematicians.

From the Head of Student Wellbeing Junior School

I am thrilled to introduce myself to the Kardinia community. My name is Alicia Bennett and I am the newly appointed Head of Student Wellbeing. Over the last few weeks, I have been fortunate enough to get to know many students, staff, and parents within the community. I am grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait to get to know more families within the KIC community.

September is a wonderful month when considering wellbeing – we celebrate R U Ok? Day and Body Bright month.

R U Ok? Day a National Day of Action to remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘Are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone, they care about might be struggling with life.

KIC is fortunate enough to have become an accredited Body Bright school. Butterfly Body Bright is a strength-based, evidence-informed program developed by Butterfly Foundation. It is designed to be integrated into Australian primary schools. The program aims to promote healthy attitudes and behaviours towards the body, eating and physical activity in children, so they can thrive at school and in life. Butterfly Body Bright takes a whole school approach to supporting positive body image in children.

In the month of September, we will be enjoying activities on R U Ok? Day. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about caring for themselves and their friends. We will celebrate the day with students identifying who they have within their community that can support them. Additionally, children will be asked to make a pledge to do something kind for someone they know and help fill their bucket and put a smile on their face. You might like to start talking to your children about this. Some ideas might be: help a family member cook dinner to show you care, mow the neighbour’s lawn and ask her how she is doing. Lastly, SRC have led an initiative to introduce a friendship bench to ensure all students have someone to check in on them and make sure they are okay.

During the Body Bright month, we will be having a disco on 15/09/2022 which is organised by a Year 6 student as an exhibition initiative. Students will be invited to move their bodies, dancing and celebrating their unique abilities. Additionally, students within classes will meet with their buddies and share positive affirmations about themselves. Students will then write one positive affirmation about themselves, and a positive affirmation display will be made in the new Junior School building. Students’ positive affirmations will reflect what they love about being themselves.

Alumni News

RECONNECTING WITH OUR ALUMNI NETWORK

The Kardinians are currently searching for alumni who have lost contact with the College and their peers, since they graduated. While we have 100% registration for the current Class of 2022, we have missing members going back to 1999, our first graduating year.

If you are among the missing Kardinian alumni, please log onto: https://kardinians.com/ and join our growing network.

Library Services

This year students had so much fun reading and voting for books in the Picture Book and Early Childhood categories. A few titles caused a great deal of debate and we quickly decided we didn’t envy the judges this year with such a diverse selection of books. To read more about the winners and honour books click here. https://cbca.org.au/winners-2022

During this term in weeks 5 – 7 in the Learning Commons we celebrated International, Cultural and CBCA Book Week together. The CBCA Book Week Theme is ‘Dreaming with your eyes open…’. We have shared spaces to display countries, cultures, the CBCA Shortlisted Books, the shortlisted winners and events across the campus. That also meant our Library activities were joined for students to collaborate their artistic skills. Students had fun creating Origami Lotus Flowers, painting birds with Ink blowing and Chinese Calligraphy. We hope to decorate ceramic tiles using Posca pens and cold wax. Our CBCA Book Week guest, Author Andrew Daddo, will visit KIC classes via the Zoom platform. Students have so far shown a lot of enthusiasm.

School TV – Exam Jitters

Setting a schedule is vitally important. Students need to schedule everything from sleeping and eating, to studying and exercising. It is one of the best ways to manage inevitable exam stress. Students need to look after themselves when they have big demands in their life.

When it comes to productive study, sometimes less is often more. It is recommended that students hit the books in 50-minute stints, broken up by 15-minute breaks. This gives the brain, and body, a rest. Adolescents will often underestimate the amount of sleep they need. Getting enough sleep is key to successful study practices.

Research shows that physical activity also has a very positive impact on mental wellbeing. Eating well is another crucial factor to maintaining concentration and staying focused on the task ahead.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
