Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 23 February

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 23 February

From the Principal

As we are halfway through the fourth week of the first term of school, things are starting to feel a little more normal than they have been in the last two years. However, given the last two years of disruption, moving in and out of lockdown and remote learning, it would be fanciful to think that everything will quickly go back to the way it was pre COVID and indeed, in some instances, at all.

One of the challenges we are conscious of and working towards is ensuring that our students know and understand what it takes to be wise, respectful and friendly members of our school community. This is a trait that Kardinia has always been well known for, but it is not something that we take for granted.

For some students this has been and remains the way they operate. For a small minority of others, we need to re-establish our norms and expectations for how we show respect to staff and fellow students, our College grounds and facilities and the rules and regulations which are an integral part of making our school such a positive place to learn in.

It will take time to reinforce but it is something that we are strongly committed to ensuring that it is an integral part of our College community. The support of our families in reinforcing this at home as well will be greatly appreciated.

From the Head of Senior School

Founders’ Day
Students are getting excited about our Founders’ Day celebration at Adventure Park next week. Parent helper submissions closed today. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to come along and support our early years students. I will contact volunteer parents in the next day or two with further information. We are all looking forward to an enjoyable day next Wednesday 2 March.

Year 6 Investiture
This Friday we are looking forward to the Year 6 Investiture. Junior School leaders will be recognised in a formal ceremony where they will receive their leadership badges. We are excited to be able to invite parents to attend the ceremony, while students will watch from their classrooms on a live stream.

New Lower Primary Building
The new building is looking great and growing day by day.

Another successful weekend of rowing

The Kardinia Rowing Squad made the trip up to Nagambie on Saturday for a very long day of racing. We had two crews racing in the Under 19 Coxed Quad and 1 in the Under 21 Coxed Quad in the morning, conditions were good and two crews made it through to the finals. Our Under 21 crew of Tully Combridge, Leija Murphy, Issy Carland, Monique Guest and Tash Bogdanovski had a fantastic row and brought home a win. Our Under 17 crew racing in the Under 19 Quad placed 2nd with 3rd only 0.15 seconds behind.
In the afternoon our attention turned to racing School Events. We had crews in the School Girls Coxed Quad Div 1, Div 2 and Div 3. Both our Div 1 and Div 3 crews progressed to the Final. The conditions were perfect although it was very hot on the water. Our Div 1 Girls placed 2nd, beating crews who had previously been faster than them. Our Div 3 crew, who were our under 17 quad of Eliza Dean, Eliza Jenkins, Audrey Semjaniv, Grace Holton and Liv Quirk, had a well fought race and came out victors with a first place.

Well done to our crews that raced in Nagambie on the weekend. This coming Saturday is Junior Girls State Champs here on the Barwon and once again we should see some great racing from our Jr Girls crews.

Kardinia Flyers

Visit the link below to donate to the flyers, and read on to learn about this great initiative!
https://superswim.org.au/t/kardinia-flyers
For the month of February , Amelia and Cooper Jennings, alongside Max and Tom Hussey, are involved in the super swim challenge for the Starlight Children’s foundation. They have called their team the ‘Kardinia Flyers’ and are swimming laps at the school pool and extra in training. They are aiming to swim a total of 250kms in the month of February to try and raise $2500 for children in hospital. So far, they are 75% of the way towards their goal, with just under 10 days to go.

Laps For Life

As part of the IB CAS program, some of our IB Yr 1 students are swimming in LAPS FOR LIFE in March to raise awareness about youth mental health and fund raise for REACHOUT. You can support Mia Lyons, Leija Murphy, Louis Perryman and Steph Read as they swim most lunchtimes to reach their team goal, through this link: https://www.lapsforlife.com.au/fundraisers/KICIBSwimmers

Judo News

The Judo Club is resurging strongly in 2022. The competition season kicked off in the best way last weekend, with Jules Aiberti and Jimmy Gibbs competing in the Canberra International Open. Both players showed their class, with Jimmy winning Gold in the O-66kg division, and Jules winning Gold in the Cadets U-60kg division and Silver in the U-60kg Junior Men’s division. It was a great trip and hopefully a sign of things to come! Our elite members have the Sydney International next weekend, then the Melbourne International coming up in March.

It is so very pleasing to see the Judo Club quickly filling up with new members. I really get the feeling that people are relishing the chance to get out and get stuck into activities. I’m sure too that our new group of coaches are getting a great response from our members. Hayden Nilon, Moe Sakio, Johnno Walker and Sakura Tajiri are driving a surge in numbers in the senior classes, while Marlee Keirl, Jimmy Gibbs and Ryan Cheng, with the invaluable guidance of Mr Ota, are gaining more and more confidence as leaders in the junior classes. Finally can I give a special vote of thanks to Mr Ota, who keeps our ship on an even keel when I am away on Judo Australia business.

School TV – Surviving Final Year

Adolescence is a significant developmental stage marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is characterised by an emerging sense of self-identity, exploration of personal interests, beliefs, values and goals, increased independence and autonomy beyond the family, growing responsibility, increased engagement in risk behaviours, emerging sexuality, amplified significance of peers, intensification of gender stereotypes, and shifting relationships with parents and caregivers. Adolescents seek increased independence and autonomy, which requires ongoing negotiation and compromise within the parent-child relationship.

Website Design and Development

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
