Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 22 June 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 22 June 2022

From the Principal

As we wrap up Semester 1 of 2022, I wish all members of our College Community a safe, restful and rejuvenating holiday break.

Tonight, for the first time since 2019, we have the opportunity for our Year 12 students to enjoy the traditional Mid-Year Dinner.  It is yet another example of moving back to a sense of normality.  I am looking forward to seeing our Year 12’s dressed up and having fun.

At the other extreme end of experience, some of our Year 11 students are currently in the centre of Australia, covered in red sand and having a fantastic and enlightening time.  I look forward to hearing their stories when they return.

Finally, Friday will see our Lower Primary team packing up and moving to their new building over the holidays. There will be an opportunity for our community to view the new building early in the term. I have no doubt our youngest students are very excited about the move.

It has been another interesting (to say the least) semester and I am extremely grateful for our staff, students and parents for the way they have continued to maximise learning opportunities throughout the disruption that continues to flow from the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fingers crossed we continue to make positive steps forward throughout the rest of the year.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents,

On Friday this week classes will cease at 2.20pm and buses will depart at 2.30pm and 2.35pm. Classes will resume on Tuesday 19 July.

On Friday Senior School students and staff will attend the revived House Music Competition which has not been possible for the past two years due to the pandemic. In this revival, each house has prepared two groups: a choir and an instrumental group each with a maximum of thirty performers. The massed choirs of the past are still deemed to be too risky.

At the final assembly on Friday, we will have the opportunity to acknowledge the Cross-Country age champions, and to enjoy a retrospective on the recent year nine experiences in Queensland and the Grampians.

On Friday we will farewell Michelle Liddy, one of our senior Media and English teachers, who is moving to Singapore to take up the position of Head of Media at Dulwich College. Michelle has been instrumental in developing our exceptional media programme and in guiding our VCE and IB students to some outstanding media achievements. She leaves with our deep appreciation of her contribution to KIC and our very good wishes.

Phil Houghton, our Event Manager, Zeljka Kovacev, one of our Senior maths teachers, and Sharon O’Neill, one of our wonderful LSOs, will also begin a short period on long service leave. We wish them well.

Finally, I am sure you will all join me in thanking the College staff as they begin a very well deserved break.

From the Head of Junior School

This Friday is the last day of Term 2 and the last day students in FY, Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4 and Y6 will be in their current classrooms. To celebrate the end of term a fun day of activities has been planned.

Friday is a casual clothes day, so please help your child choose appropriate clothes for the activities they’re engaged in. Learning Group teachers will be posting a timetable for the day in Seesaw to help you with this decision making.

Year 5 students are also invited to dress in casual clothes and will be spending their fun day at the Grove campus.

The types of events that are scheduled for students at Bell Post Hill include African Drumming workshops and performances, The Flying Bookworm performance, an author visit for Year 3 and 4, swimming fun for Year 2 and Year 6, movies, boardgames, and a tour of the new Lower Primary building for our FY-Y2 students.

School finishes at 2.20pm this Friday for our FY-Y6 students, with Highview finishing at 2.15pm. Buses will depart at 2.30pm and 2.35pm.

This Friday, student lost property will be displayed on a table outside the JS staff room in front of the car park. Items not collected will be donated to charity.

The Grove students are very excited to be able to sell freshly laid Grove eggs to our community. On Friday students will be selling approximately 14 dozen eggs @ $5 per dozen. First come, first serve. There will be a table located out the front of the Junior School Office facing the car park from 8.30am to 9.00am. The students are looking forward to selling their eggs.

Student reports for Semester 1 have now been published and can be accessed through KIC Online. Please refer to a broadcast sent this morning for further details.

Please keep your eye out later this week for information about next term. There will be some changes to how parents and students access the Lower and Upper Primary parts of the school due to construction on the new Upper Primary building.

From the Deputy Head of Senior School – Teaching and Learning

Year 10 into 11 Information Sessions

For students – Each year, we hold two Personal Development sessions for Year 10 students to support them in making decisions about their career pathway and their learning program for Years 11 and 12. One session has already happened earlier in 2022. The second session will be held on Tuesday, 26 July 2022. In this session, students will:

  • hear from representatives of post-secondary education providers,
  • learn about the role the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (“VTAC”) plays in determining ATAR scores,
  • learn more about the senior programs offered at Kardinia (VCE, VET and the IB Diploma), and
  • review their Morrisby profile and use it to help guide the selection of the program and subjects they anticipate taking in Years 11 and 12.

For parents – Part of this program is an information evening that we hold for parents. At this session, we will provide parents with a greater insight into the VCE, VET and IB Diploma programs. We will also present information about post-secondary education opportunities.

The evening will be held on Thursday, 28 July 2022 in the Katsumata Centre. It will begin at 7:30pm, sharp.

Please indicate your attendance at the evening by completing this form.

Year 12 Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher Interviews for all students undertaking a VCE Unit 3/4 subject or an IB Year 2 subject will be held on Tuesday, 2 August and Thursday, 11 August 2022. These interviews will be taking place online via Microsoft Teams.

Interviews are open to all Year 12 students and to Year 11 students who are currently undertaking a Unit 3/4 VCE subject in relation to that subject only. Interviews for Year 11 VCE subjects and IB Year 1 subjects will be held later this term.

We have established the following etiquettes for online interviews, which are in place to make the experience as efficient and user friendly as possible:

  • Interviews will be restricted to a maximum of 8 minutes in duration.
  • While interviews are available to all parents, they are not compulsory for those families not needing to contact teachers.
  • There are staggered start times for teachers to accommodate the number of interview slots required. Some teachers will start their interviews at 3.40 pm and the remainder will start by 4:00pm.
  • Year 11 students may only book interviews for the Unit 3/4 VCE subject they are studying. Please do not book an interview with a teacher that takes your child for a Unit 1/2 VCE subject or a Year 1 IB Diploma subject.
  • You will only see timeslots that are available at the time you are using the system. As timeslots are booked for teachers, they will no longer be displayed as available. The booking system prevents double-booking of teachers and/or parents and guardians.
  • Separated families entitled to interviews will both have access to the booking system and are able to book interview times.
  • In some instances, teachers work with more Year 12 students than there are available interview timeslots. If you are unable to schedule an interview, please complete this form and we will make alternative arrangements for you to speak to the relevant teacher.
  • If you do not have internet access, please contact the College on (03) 5278 9999 for assistance in booking interviews.
  • Bookings open on Monday, 27 June 2022 and will close on Monday, 4 July 2022 at 3:00pm. After this time, no further bookings can be made.

Instructions to guide you through the interview booking process can be found here. Instructions relating to the accessing online interviews will be forwarded by email closer to the date. If you do encounter difficulties, please feel free to contact the College on (03) 5278 9999 for assistance.

Co-Curricular Spotlight

With 46 activities, 1000-plus students and almost 90 staff involved, the Co-Curricular program has had a busy first Semester. Many elements shape the development of our students with the intellectual aspect being only one. To develop the whole student, five elements that we call the ‘S.P.I.C.E’ of Learning are essential.  These are Social, Personal, Intercultural, Critical/Creative and Ethical skills and attributes. The activities delivered through the Co-Curricular program are designed to provide students the opportunity to develop these important elements, which are critical in developing the whole student and enabling students to reach their full potential. It also reinforces to students that they are more than just a grade, and allows them to celebrate and be acknowledged for their strengths and achievements outside of the classroom.

Thank you to all of the students and staff who have been involved in the program this semester and we look forward to a great Semester 2.

Upcoming Documentary

COMING TO THE KIC COMMUNITY IN TERM 3!

iNDIEFLIX Shines the Light on Anxiety with this Must-See Documentary:

“ANGST: RAISING AWARENESS AROUND ANXIETY”

ANGST will be available for the KIC Community to watch from 15 – 21 August, with an online panel session on Wednesday 17 August at 7pm.

What is the difference between “being anxious” and having an anxiety disorder? What can we do about the 634% rise in use of Mental Health America’s online tool for anxiety since the start of Covid-19? Why is there still so much fear and stigma in just talking to others instead of hiding online? What can each of us do to make it better and best engage in a full and happy life?

Angst is on a mission: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. The documentary delves into all aspects of our society’s most common mental health challenge with:

  • Candid interviews with kids and teens, who discuss their anxiety, its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope
  • Expert perspectives, (from institutions such as Stanford University, Child Mind Institute), who talk about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects and resources to help
  • Tips, tricks and strategies to help reset thinking patterns, push back against anxiety and support others
  • Awareness that anyone can be touched by – and overcome – anxiety, via a unique and revealing interview with mental health advocate Michael Phelps, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.

Appropriate for viewers from 10+

School TV – Physical Activity and Exercise

Physical activity and exercise is not only vital to a child’s overall development but it has so many other benefits. With children spending more time on computers being sedentary, it is even more important to get kids moving more. As well as maintaining a healthy weight, it also improves concentration by helping to establish connections between different parts of the brain. It helps kids develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. On an emotional level, it reduces stress and anxiety while improving posture and sleep. Physical activity and exercise is good for your child’s health, now and in the future. Parents should encourage their kids to move or play sport at every opportunity – in and out of school.

Website Design and Development

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
