Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 22 February 2023

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 22 February 2023

From the Principal

Today, our College is featured in the Geelong Advertiser as the top performing secondary school in the region for our NAPLAN scores from 2022.

It is great to have such positive press and I am really proud of our staff and students for this overall achievement, but I also acknowledge that NAPLAN is only a useful tool for determining where students are at, in terms of some very specific metrics, at a place in time.

From the start of the year there have also been so many other wonderful achievements from our students, both within school and in their wider community.  There are far too many to name them all here but just a few are the following:

  • Darcy Giddings, Senior School Sports Captain, who is competing tonight against the world’s top discus throwers right here in Geelong at Landy field
  • Year 3 student Frankie Reidy who raised $4,000 for the Leukemia Foundation by shaving her hair
  • Jack Cutler who presented to the Geelong Central Rotary Club yesterday morning about his incredible time over the holidays at the National Science Forum and
  • Roo Robinson who, as an off duty surf lifesaver, saved a man’s life over the summer break.

It is all these types of achievements with which our students should be equally measured, not just in NAPLAN or ATAR scores.  I am really pleased to say on a very wide range of accomplishments our students are doing remarkably well, and I am very proud of all of them.

Congratulations Brendan D’Arcy!

One of our Design Technology teachers, Brendan D’Arcy, has received the award for Secondary Educator of the Year (Design Technology) for 2022 from the Design And Technology Teachers Association (DATTA).

As part of this award, Brendan will be interviewed and featured in the September edition of DATTA’s ‘Technotes’ journal.

Harmony Day at KIC

This year to celebrate Harmony day, we will be creating an e-cookbook of recipes submitted by our diverse College community members. The book will then be shared with the College community on Harmony Day, 21 March 2023.

We have an incredibly rich community of cultures her at KIC, so what better way to celebrate it than by connecting through a delicious treat or meal to share with family and friends.

Over the next few weeks students, staff and families are encouraged to share a favourite recipe (sweet, savoury, or maybe even a drink) that may represent who they are and where they have come from. Recipes will then be reviewed and become part of our 2023 Harmony Day Celebration E-Book Hungry for Harmony. A few selected recipes will also be available to purchase at Centrepoint Café on Harmony Day.

Check out the Wellbeing Hub page on KICOnline for details on how to share your recipe! https://kiconline.kardinia.vic.edu.au/d2l/home/12435

Please contact Kate Robertson k.robertson@kardinia.vic.edu.au or Katie Self k.self@kardinia.vic.edu.au if you have any questions.

Ross Trevaskis – A ‘Celebration of Life’

1952- 2023

Ross, the Master of Understatement and a Man of Mystique.

Ross was one of the earliest members of staff, arriving in 1997, a pioneer during Kardinia’s fundamental development, after teaching at St. Joseph’s College, Newtown. A secondary maths teacher and VCE Coordinator, his contribution to the college was significant during its early years and subsequent growth.

To his colleagues, Ross was known for his efficient, but brief VCE meetings, his immaculate ‘green machine’, as an avid Cat’s supporter, an overall sports tragic, a fitness enthusiast, a proud father and grandfather, and a kind and compassionate friend. His dry sense of humour and Ross’s understated one liners and actions, were classic.

Alumni fondly remember his professional support as a teacher, his knowledge of mathematics, his ‘checks’ outside the classroom, his sporting history and injuries, his serious demeanour and the ultimate challenge to make him smile, during their younger years. Only as they reached their senior years, did they realise it was all a rort, laughing about it, and even getting him up to dance at the Year 12 dinner. Another strong alumni memory was that Mr Trevaskis ‘played for North’ before his knees caused him to end his footy career. The assumption was that Ross played for North Melbourne, which he had never stated; his playing years were with North Shore.

As a Mighty Cats supporter Ross appreciated the celebration of a win, and on occasion he may have been known to leave the ground early and missed some final minute turnarounds. Ross keenly followed the Kardinians Footy Tipping competition and after taking home a prize in recent years, he decided to put his win towards a skydiving adventure!

Retirement enabled Ross to pursue more of what he loved to do and to spend time with those important in his life. His compassion for others even extended to being registered as an Organ Donor. A testament of the man.

Ross, we will miss your friendship and company. The Kardinia International College community ‘Celebrate your Life’.

ALUMNI UPDATES

Introducing some more of our alumni who are now members of staff:

Bella Anketell-Costa (Class of 2011)

When joining the Kardinia community in Year 10, I was always amazed at the vast variety of programs and opportunities the school had on offer. I embraced as many as I could: sporting events and teams, specialised camps, being a part of the school production that opened the Katsumata Centre, Les Miserable, the list goes on. When I had finished my Year 12 exams, I had the opportunity to volunteer in several learning groups with the amazing teachers in the Junior School. It was my positive experiences as both a student and volunteer that helped me form the dream of returning to Kardinia and contributing to its culture, as so many had contributed to my development, and here I am!

Thank you for welcoming me back and making my first year as a Year 3 Learning Group Teacher, one to remember. It has been a whirlwind seeing so many familiar faces. I love being a part of this wonderful community and creating positive experiences for my students.

Kai Pavlicevic (Class of 2021)

I graduated in 2021 and am now the squad coach of Kardinia International College’s Swimming Club. The responsibilities of my role include designing and conducting programs that foster the goals of both current and upcoming swimmers, while coordinating new enrolments and assisting in the transition of learn to swim to the squad program. What I like most about the job is when we get to competitions where I see the results of my swimmers’ hard work and dedication! Ideally, the plan is to expand the squad program and increase the level at which the swimmers compete at, including state and national championships. Outside of work I am studying Engineering and Business degrees at RMIT, and I am an avid North Geelong Croatia supporter on weekends.

Lions Club ‘Youth of the Year’ Award

On Tuesday 14 February two of our students, Bella Casey and Poppy Brown, competed in the Lions Club of Geelong – Hamlyn Heights ‘Youth of the Year’ competition. The Youth of the Year Program focuses on encouraging and fostering leadership skills in Australia students in the later years of schooling. The program emphasises qualities such as contribution to the community and school, public speaking, academic skills and sporting and cultural involvement, and aims to bring forth the next generation of outstanding young Australians.

Bella and Poppy each completed an application and were interviewed by the panel of judges before joining the members of the club at a dinner meeting.  During the dinner meeting the students were presented two impromptu topics and had to speak on each topic for two minutes. The first topic asked them to consider whether mobile phones should be banned in schools, and the second asked them about their experiences during the COVID-19 remote learning periods. After this both students presented prepared speeches, which were allowed to be up to five minutes in length. Bella spoke on the role of journalism in the climate crisis, and Poppy asked ‘Why do we seek knowledge?’. Both students presented extremely well, both in their speeches and in their interviews and the judges noted how privileged they had been to spend time with both students and that they felt the future was in good hands. In the end, Poppy was announced as the winner and she will go on to the East Region Final in March.

Congratulations to both Poppy and Bella for their participation in this program and for such wonderful representation of the College.

The latest Regatta report is in from our rowers!

Nagambie Regatta – 18 February 2023
The two senior crews headed up the freeway to a windy and warm 30°c Lake Nagambie. Rowing isn’t an easy sport, but rowing with wind makes it much harder. After an unexpected swim (courtesy of the wind), a comedy of errors, rollercoaster ride of emotions, and mixed communication between officials, the Division 1 crew pulled together to take home a medal for their ‘FU214X+’ final. The determination shown in overcoming the adversity of the morning carried through to the afternoon category, with the girls also placing 1st in the Division 1 school category, with a clear 10 second win against their nearest opponent.
The Division 5 crew were excited to get out on the water. This was the first row for this crew, most of whom had not competed in a 2000m race before, and with only Fionn having experience rowing at Nagambie prior. Despite a rough start and the wind, the Division 5 girls showed incredible flexibility and the ability to mould together quickly as a team, finishing strongly, demonstrating great technique and rhythm. An incredible day and achievement for both crews, topped off with a refreshing swim before heading home!

THE TRADITION OF FOUNDERS DAY

The recognition of Founders’ Day at Kardinia has been embedded since its beginnings. It is a day to celebrate the origins of Kardinia International College and honour our Founders, Mr and Mrs Katsumata.

A Founders’ Day tradition from 1997, was the Certificate Ceremony presented to Mr Katsumata until his death in 2008. The arrival of the certificate was always surprising for Mr Katsumata and included a parachute, an elephant, an alpaca, a rock band, Elvis, BABBA and even Marilyn Monroe popping out of a cake! Mrs Katsumata was always presented with a stunning bouquet of flowers.

Careers News

Last Tuesday, 14 February, the Careers Team ran a short information session for Year 11 students on the theme of ‘Future Planning and Goal Setting’. This session looked at the impact of technology on employment, emerging occupations and students were given time to create an action plan for the next two years.

Year 11 is an important time for young people to begin thinking about life after school. For many, a move into VCE and IB has meant that they are consolidating their interests and beginning to think about further education, training and employment pathways. We encourage students to take a proactive approach to their career journey over the next two years and begin exploring their post- school options. This could include attending open days and information sessions held at universities, TAFEs and private providers, it may include undertaking work experience (this is available to students during the school holidays) and engaging in networking activities. Our key message is that you make better-informed decisions when you have thoroughly explored your options.

Our next two career activities will occur in week 6 with Year 9 students participating in the Future Directions session on Tuesday, 7 March and the Year 12’s participating in a session on Thursday, 9 March that looks at preparing for life after high school.

School TV – School Refusal

Though many children will refuse to go to school at some stage in their lives, school refusal is very different to truancy. It is a more serious condition than separation anxiety and often stems from a child’s anxiety about school. They may be worried about their school work, interacting with other kids, dealing with teachers, playing sports or being away from family. School refusal is a behaviour that can also be accompanied by sadness or depression, physical symptoms and social isolation. This condition is equally common amongst boys and girls, from all socioeconomic groups and across both primary and secondary levels.
