Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 19 October 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 19 October 2022

From the Principal

Last Friday we had the opportunity for Year 12 to celebrate their last official day at school. It was a great morning and it was so nice to see our students having good, clean (and a little bit muddy) fun. I know how hard they have worked to get to this point, and I wish them all the very best for their upcoming exams.

On the other end of the spectrum it was also lovely to visit Year 2 on Friday night for their sleepover at school. The Lower Primary building was transformed into sleeping dorms with very excited little people in their PJs waiting for their movies to start, having had a great day out at Serendip Sanctuary.

As the Paul Kelly saying goes “from little things big things grow” and it makes me think about how not all that long ago our Year 12’s were Year 2’s with all those years of school ahead of them. I have no doubt that this year’s Year 2’s will grow into the impressive young people that our Year 12’s have become and make the most of the opportunities that school provides for them in the interim.

From the Head of Junior School

Camps
Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Year 2 Sleepover. The teachers did a great job leading an excursion to Serendip Sanctuary during the day and a sleepover in the Lower Primary building that night. This was the first camp experience for this cohort of students, and I was very impressed with how mature and responsible they all were.

On Monday this week I ventured down to Angelsea to join our Year 3 students on their camp. The day was filled with lots of fun and adventure as the students tried archery, beach soccer, bouldering, low ropes, trampolines, flying fox and more. This was also their first camp experience and again, I was very impressed with how kind and respectful all the students were. Thanks to all the adults who made both these experiences possible.

New Upper Primary Building
Progress on the new Upper Primary building is now going well. Unfortunately, due to delays at the start of the project the completion date has been pushed back to late Term 1 next year. This means that our Upper Primary students will spend the first term in the current classrooms and will move into new classrooms at the end of Term 1. In the coming weeks we will start to see the steel structure put in place.

Lower Primary Athletics Day
Today was the Lower Primary Athletics Day in the Junior School. Students enjoyed competing for their houses at Goldsworthy Reserve in track and field events. Well done to all the students who tried their best and showed great sportsmanship. Thank you to all the adults who helped plan and run this special event, including our parent helpers and enthusiastic spectators.

Alumni News

This week, registered Kardinians from the Classes of 2021, 2017, 2012, 2007 & 2002 will celebrate their 5, 10, 15 and 20 Year reunions in the Kastumata Centre. Alumni from these peer years are warmly invited to attend. It would be appreciated if alumni could share this invitation with former classmates.

For more information, please log onto The Kardinians at https://kardinians.com/

The ‘Events’ tab will provide details and an RSVP link, which is essential for entry. We hope that you can join your peers and celebrate your milestone reunion.

Our youngest Kardinians, the Class of 2022, celebrated their final day in style with a ‘Secret Service/Army’ themed event. There were plenty of under-cover dark glasses, black suits and army fatigues, holding super-sized water guns! Too close! Too bad!

We hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Kardinia Judo Club

The recent 2022 National Schools Championships highlighted the character of the Kardinia Judo Club. Kardinia had two people represent the school, one a proven champion, the other a debutante stepping on the competition mat for the very first time. Both gave their best effort, displaying sportsmanship and respect at all times. Jimmy Gibbs, current Australian Champion in his age/weight group and Hal Ramsay, newcomer to the Judo Club this year, both lived up to our nation-wide reputation of being respectful, friendly, yet fierce rivals.

Originally we had planned to take a large team to the National Schools Championships on the Gold Coast, but by the time the event date had been announced (smack bang in the middle of the holidays) almost all of the available accommodation on the Gold Coast had been booked out. Ironically our team of two people also ended up competing in the same division. Hal showed great determination in his bouts, while Jimmy had little trouble winning the division.

Kardinia International College finished equal 7th out of 104 schools. In 2023 I would very much like to finish first, and planning is already underway to achieve that aim!

The Judo Club has tournaments this term in Gippsland, our own KIC Cup and the final Judo Victoria tournament in Broadmeadows, so our team for next year’s assault on the National Schools Championships is already gaining valuable experience.

From the Archives

Last century, a school library held all the wisdom and answers to many of life’s questions. It also enabled young girls the access to a wealth of literature prior to the internet, audio books and podcasts. However, the only mention of the original Morongo library at Bell Post Hill in Morongo- The First Fifty Years, is that ‘library extensions’ were carried out in 1962.

A decade on, the Morongo library was officially opened on August 23, 1973, as the Neilson Library in recognition of Council Secretary, Mr D. F. Neilson.

Archived reference books in our collection, retain their hand-written book plates and give an insight into school days during the Morongo era.

With the opening of Kardinia International College in 1996, the library became an important hub in the new school. With the demand for additional space increasing dramatically over the first two decades of the College, a new library development was planned. The Learning Commons and Senior Centre, which incorporated part of the original Neilson Library, was opened in 2015.

“Replacing the former library, the Learning Commons has embraced a futuristic design and approach to learning with a combination of open areas, discussion rooms, silent study areas and technological access. Student Services and senior staff offices were also relocated here to allow for more centralised access to key personnel. The Learning Commons environment is highlighted by a central atrium hub with a multi-dimensional representation of the universe flowing down to a learning-focused carpet, all designed by Debbie Goodfellow.”

School TV – Adolescence

Adolescence is a significant developmental stage marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is characterised by an emerging sense of self-identity, exploration of personal interests, beliefs, values and goals, increased independence and autonomy beyond the family, growing responsibility, increased engagement in risk behaviours, emerging sexuality, amplified significance of peers, intensification of gender stereotypes, and shifting relationships with parents and caregivers. Adolescents seek increased independence and autonomy, which requires ongoing negotiation and compromise within the parent-child relationship.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
