Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 17 November 2021

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 17 November 2021

From the Principal

As I write eNews today, our final VCE exams are being completed.

It has been a remarkable community effort in these challenging times that has enabled the IB and VCE exams to be undertaken with very little disruption. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the organisation and implementation of exams and to our whole school community for doing all they can to stay safe and well and protect each other.

A huge congratulations to our Year 12 students and their families for reaching this major milestone of finishing school and beginning the post school chapter of their lives. We will really miss the Class of 2021.  We have been through so much together, but we are also very excited for them to spread their wings and make the most of all they have learned through the last 13 years.

We still have a few more weeks of school left for the rest of our students so please remain vigilant and take care to not send anyone with signs and symptoms of COVID-19 to school.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents and Students,
This week we farewell our year 12 students. Today the last of the VCE examinations was completed. Tomorrow we will mark the end of their secondary education during the year 12 Graduation Ceremony which will be streamed live on Youtube via the following link: https://youtu.be/HTLOyAzzs-A

On Friday night we will celebrate their achievements over the past thirteen years during the Graduation Dinner. This has been a difficult two years for all students, but perhaps for none more so than those completing years 11 and 12.

This particular cohort have demonstrated great resilience, perseverance and positivity. They will graduate from the College with our best wishes and with a deep sense of appreciation for their contribution to our community.

2022 Instrumental Music Program Enrolments

Dear Parents,

It is almost time to consider the enrolment or re-enrolment of your child into the 2022 Instrumental Music Program at Kardinia International College.

Given the two years we have had, it is quite reasonable to reflect upon and re-evaluate the role this valuable program has in the overall education of our children and whether the program, in light of the Zoom/Teams experience, continues to remain practical. Regular interaction with the instrumental teacher, the continued engagement with music through music practice, and the promise of collective music making through band, ensemble and other performance opportunities have helped students remain focused during these last two years. Amongst other activities, it has also facilitated the pathway to a healthy mindset through creative expression and learning.

Overwhelmingly, parents have told us that it has been involvement with music that has kept their children engaged and positive throughout the entire COVID lockdown experience. Research further supports the critical role that music has played in maintaining student’s mental health and wellbeing during this time.

Music and Mood: What music can do for you.

The Kardinia International College Music dept is proud to have played a part in helping students through these challenging times and advises parents that enrolments are now open for tuition in 2022. Preference will be given to early enrolments as there may be limited spaces for some instruments.

2022 promises to be an exciting year with new initiatives including a new choral program, expanded band and orchestral activities and more performance opportunities for our students. We look forward to your continued support and for the opportunity to share in the musical development and journey of musical discovery of your child.

Judo Club News

The Judo Club is continuing to recover from the many breaks in training, and is welcoming back some long lost souls with some overdue belt grading promotions! Luis Morton, Mitchell Murison and Samson Russell have all been promoted to Yellow-White-Black Tip. Dylan Keirl and Max Drake have been promoted to Orange belt, while Ryan Cheng (Orange-Green), Tom Dacres-Mannings (Green-Blue) and Marlee Keirl (Green-Blue) have all been promoted and are working together as coaches for the juniors in our Leadership Programme.

The Lunchtime Rumbles (sparring practice) and Lunchtime Tumbles (throwing practice) continue to be a big hit on Tuesday lunchtimes. The club has also welcomed three new members, Ellie Shanahan, Freya Borg and Ciara Molloy. I look forward to seeing them achieve their first grade, hopefully by the end of the year! The club will continue to train past the end of the school year, with juniors finishing on the 17th of December and the seniors on the 22nd of December.

From the Head of Wellbeing JS

Now that we are coming to the end of the year, transition will be upon us before we know it. For most students, this is an exciting and happy time, focusing on the positives of a new year level, of new teachers and new friendships. However, for some children, particularly after COVID lockdowns, the idea of change might be more difficult.

At KIC, we have many systems in place to ensure that transition is a positive experience for all students. In addition to this, our KIC Wellbeing Hub page, the ‘School TV’ resource has some wonderful videos to support parents in holding conversations about transitions with their child: https://kardinia.vic.schooltv.me/newsletter/school-transitions.

If you have any further concerns about transition, please do talk to your Learning Group teacher.

School TV

It is not always easy for children and teenagers to always know how to manage friendships. Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop.
For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people.

For others, this can be much harder to navigate. Belonging to a group that is like-minded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a child’s wellbeing. Friendships are full of ups and downs and it is better for kids to learn how to manage and build their own friendships, even though as an adult carer you may be tempted to interfere.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
