Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 17 August 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 17 August 2022

From the Principal

Last Friday night I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Australian Education Awards along with nine of my colleagues.  We attended these Awards as finalists in the Best Strategic Plan category.

I would have loved to have been able to take our whole school community to these Awards as I feel that everyone had a part to play in creating such a fantastic Strategic Plan.  Alas, we were limited to a table of ten and so staff names were drawn out of a hat.  The night can only be described as like the Logies or Oscars for Education.  It was a very fancy affair with Natalie Bassingthwaighte as emcee.

While Kardinia were not winners on the night, I nevertheless felt very proud of our whole school community’s efforts in wanting to have a long term and actionable plan for continuous school improvement.

It was also wonderful to see Education as a vocation and educators, themselves, in the spotlight and being applauded for the amazing and positive impact they can have on our next generations.

From the Head of Junior School

2022 Independent Schools Victoria Parent Satisfaction Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The school is taking part in the 2022 Independent Schools Victoria Parent Satisfaction Survey. Your opinion is valuable to us and we would therefore like to invite you to participate in this survey. The aim of the survey is to gain general feedback and understand your perceptions regarding the quality of your child’s educational experience with the school. The information obtained will be used by us to evaluate parent opinion, in order to improve the quality of education at the school for students, and will enable benchmarking of the school against other Independent schools.

This week you will receive an EdSmart message with a link in order to complete the survey. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Please complete the survey by Friday 26 August 2022.

Either parent may fill out the questionnaire or both parents may complete the survey together. We ask that you complete the survey for your eldest child at the school. However, you may also complete the survey for each child you have at the school, by clicking on the link again and re-doing it for other children. When working through the questionnaire, when you read ‘school’, think of your child’s school and when you read ‘student’, think about your eldest child.

We would like to emphasise that the survey is completely anonymous. Independent Schools Victoria reports the results to the school in aggregate only.

We appreciate your taking the time to participate.

Deputy Principal

Co-Curricular News

By personalising and building on the talents of each child, students are provided with an opportunity to naturally discover their true passions. Dancing is beneficial to young children, helping them develop a wide range of gross and fine motor skills while promoting overall physical fitness, coordination, flexibility, balance, agility, strength, and stamina.

With this philosophy at the forefront of our thinking, Junior School students are offered the chance to participate in weekly dance classes after school on Friday’s in the well-equipped and mirrored studio in the School of Performing Arts. Over a period of eight or nine weeks, and with the outstanding involvement of Senior School choreographers, our enthusiastic class members warm-up, stretch, twirl, jump, and move as they learn, rehearse and perfect a variety of dance styles and routines. At the culmination of each term, proud students showcase their creativity and passion as they perform for their audience of parents and extended family.

Co-Curricular Junior School Dance will be offered again during Terms 2 and 3 in 2023.

Bendigo Judo Open Tournament 2022

On Sunday 14 August, nine members of the Kardinia Judo Club travelled up the highway to Bendigo to compete in the Bendigo Open Tournament. Eighty people from ten clubs competed in the tournament, which had a great atmosphere and a delicious BBQ smell wafting through the dojo! All nine of our judoka fought with great determination and skill, making the parents and coaches feel very proud.

Will Cromb finished a determined 5th, while firecracker Georgie Nguyen finished 3rd in the same division. Aiden Leonard, Oliver Welsh and Ava Behrens also collected Bronze medals. Ollie Greig won a Silver medal while Noah Harding won Gold in the same division. Dylan Keirl executed a very nice uchi-mata throw to finish a bout on his way to a Gold medal, while big sister Marlee demonstrated her patience and experience in winning her way to another Gold. The medal tally of three Gold, one Silver and four Bronze was of course pleasing, but most pleasing was the positive spirit, determination and sportsmanship shown by our members to their opponents. Win or lose, our members had a smile on their face, which is exactly the Kardinia spirit for which we strive.

Congratulations to all those who competed and thanks to the parents for making the long journey, and to Moe Sakio for her support and refereeing contribution.

Upcoming Event

The City of Greater Geelong, together with Barwon Child and Family Services Alliance, present this session to help children and teens
build courage and resilience assisting them to thrive.

Anxiety is a very normal part of being human, but for as many as one in five children it can reach intrusive levels, interfering with family life, friendships and school performance. Karen Young, founder of “Hey Sigmund” and author of Hey Warrior series, will explore:

  • A new, empowering way to understand anxiety
  • What to do when anxiety hits
  • How to build courage and resilience
  • Why anxiety might look like anger or tantrums and what to do
  • How social media, friendships and the changes in the adolescent brain might contribute to anxiety and what to do

School TV – Having the Alcohol Discussion

Talking to your teenager about alcohol consumption and the potential dangers associated with it can be tricky and overwhelming. However, no matter how difficult this conversation may be, it is an important one to have in order to ensure the safety of our young people.

The legal drinking age in all Australian states and territories is 18 years, however this does not deter some adolescents from experimenting with alcohol. Health experts say that young people are at greater risk of alcohol-related harm than adults as it increases the risk of damage to their developing brain. It is a substance that affects their body, behaviour and decision-making abilities, highlighting the importance of preventing or limiting your teenager’s alcohol use.

End of school and the impending festive season may be a cause for celebration for many teenagers ready to party and wanting to put this year behind them. However, the impact of the pandemic has experts concerned that these celebrations may involve excessive alcohol consumption and result in risky behaviour. Parent and carers can help minimise these risks by influencing sensible drinking habits. It is important to outline the rules and boundaries around age-appropriate alcohol consumption and what the legal implications may be. Although many teenagers are fully aware of the dangers, they put more value on the reward than adults.

Start the conversation today. Parents and carers need to educate their children on when, where and how to drink responsibly.

If you require further guidance or information, contact the Alcohol and Drug Foundation Helpline on 1300 85 85 84 for free confidential support.
