Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 15 September 2021

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 15 September 2021

From the Principal

As we come to the end of Term 3, I would like to thank our College community for your support throughout another period of changing restrictions. Our students, staff and families have, once again, demonstrated their resilience and understanding throughout this term.

Today I was involved in the online Year 9 Program, where our students participated in activities with Culture College, which is based in the Yolngu Lands in North East Arnhem Land. Our students heard from a panel of First Nation Leaders and engaged in a range of activities and discussions. I found it to be very insightful, and was very pleased with the appreciation and engagement that our students showed throughout the day. More details from today’s activities can be found in an article below.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday break.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents & Students,

In this last week of term all year 12 and year 11 students completing a VCE unit 3/4 subject have returned to on-campus learning with great enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, this has not been possible for a small number of our year 12 students, who remain in lockdown in Metropolitan Melbourne.

We were able to welcome Senior students back on campus with a lunch on Monday, while those in Metropolitan Melbourne were forwarded an Uber Eats voucher.

Meanwhile students in year 7-10 and many year 11 students have continued to make the best of remote learning.

Their efforts and their positive participation have been greatly appreciated.

Throughout today, year 9 students participated in a shortened program as an alternative to the much broader experiences, which were planned, but denied by COVID restrictions. From the level of their engagement and initial feedback the students found the various elements relevant, informative, challenging and engaging.

The program covered leadership, teamwork, aspects of career ed. and, very importantly, Indigenous Culture. Led by Bram McLeod, the Deputy Head of Senior School, Student Experience, a dedicated staff team have worked for many months to develop, modify and modify again the program in response to the ever-evolving situation.

I am sure that you will all wish to join me in recognising their extraordinary efforts and those of all Senior School teachers and staff in general, who have supported students so effectively while seamlessly moving between remote and on-campus learning.

The complexities and challenges of modern education, often hidden from view, have been even greater, during this last eighteen months. I am certain that staff and students really deserve the break which will begin on Friday, when on-line and on-campus classes will finish at lunchtime.

Students undertaking year 12 VCE subjects will have mock exams over the holiday period, while second year IB students will complete theirs this week.

We wish all of them the very best as they prepare for their final examinations late in October.

Stay safe and well

Geoff Woolard

From the Head of Junior School

The sound of Kindergarten – Year 2 children playing in the playground has been music to my ears this week. Seeing our youngest students running, laughing, and playing together has only been matched by watching them learn with their teachers.

I look forward to welcoming our Year 3 – 6 students back to school as soon as possible.

Parent Teacher Interviews were held yesterday and last night. Feedback from teachers and parents has been overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to everyone who was involved.

This is our last week of school for the term. This Friday we have an early dismissal, with kindergarten students finishing at 2.00pm and Foundation Year – Year 2 students finishing at 2.20pm. Buses will run as normal and will depart at 2.30pm and 2.35pm.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing everyone next term. Term 4 begins for all students on Monday 4 October.

Year 9 Program

On Wednesday all Year 9 students participated in a special online program with Culture College, which is based in the Northern Territory Yolngu Lands in North East Arnhem Land.

Students had the opportunity to hear from a panel of First Nation Leaders about the theme for the day – Country as Teacher. Discussions included what Country means, the significance of land for First Nations People and the importance of acknowledging and respecting Country. Our students also took part in numerous activities throughout the sessions. Thank you to Culture College for providing this invaluable experience.

Other sessions throughout the day included careers focused session – Building Your Brand, viewing the award winning short movie Babakiueria, Changing Times – King Billy & The Great Silence, and an interactive leadership and team building session with Mrs Lockhart. A special thank you also to our staff who organised and facilitated this program.

Wellbeing News

From the Head of Student Wellbeing, Junior School

R U OK? Day

Last Thursday was R U OK? Day and for the second year in a row, we participated remotely. However, this didn’t stop our Junior School students from getting fully onboard with the message “Are you REALLY ok?” from being creative with art to thinking about what a good friend can do.

Here are some of the zooms that took place:

In a fantastic display of student action and agency, one of our students, Angus (Year 3), took the theme of R U OK? Day even further. Hear about his lovely idea in the video below:

Well done, Gus!!

Missing Marty

I’ve had so many students ask when Marty can next visit us. Unfortunately, I don’t have a definite answer to this…however, I have suggested that students can draw a picture or write to Marty in the meantime.

We’ve even had a poem written about him by Harvey in Year 3:

Marty Marty you are the best,

Marty Marty you are the guest,

Marty Marty let’s all sing,

Marty Marty you are everything!

Sleep

Children these days seem to be going to bed later and later. Distractions such as TV, computer games, internet, texting friends and social media are all having a negative impact on a child’s sleep time. Sleep is vital to a child’s wellbeing. When children sleep well, they are more settled, happier and ready for school the next day. Sleep also strengthens their immune systems, supports overall development and their ability to function properly on a daily basis. Children who do not get enough sleep show increased levels of aggressive behaviour, are less attentive and are much less active. Trying to catch up on sleep on weekends is not the answer and can still lead to severe sleep deprivation. Recent studies have shown than many children, especially teenagers, are missing out on vital REM sleep, which is particularly important for memory and learning.

Withdrawal from the College

If you are planning on withdrawing your child from the College, one full term’s notice in writing is required, or one term’s fee in lieu of such notice is payable. For example, notice given in Week 2 of Term 4 will require fees to be paid up to and including Week 2 of Term 1 the following year. Please email marketing@kardinia.vic.edu.au with any questions or if you are planning to withdraw your child from the College at the end of the year. Thank you.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
