Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 15 June 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 15 June 2022

From the Principal

One of my favourite writers, Bill Bryson, in describing his journey hiking the Appalachian trail, notes that “life takes on a neat simplicity, too. Time ceases to have any meaning. When it is dark, you go to bed, and when it is light again you get up, and everything in between is just in between. It’s quite wonderful, really”.

Last week, many of our Year 9 students experienced some of the wonder that goes with being out in nature, as they undertook camps in the Grampians and Queensland.

I have heard so many great stories from staff, students and parents about the transformational journey of our students during these experiences, particularly after the last few years. The ability to get away from it all, be with their peers and having to work together as a team has been a life changing experience for many of these students. It is why we are committed to growing and building our Outdoor Educational Program and providing opportunities for all our students from the Early Years.

I want to acknowledge all the staff who worked behind the scenes to make these experiences a reality and say a huge thank you to all staff who gave up their creature comforts to spend time out in the wilderness with our students.

More journeys are planned throughout the rest of this year and I look forward to hearing further stories of personal growth, discovery, gratitude and appreciation from our students as they return.

From the Head of Junior School

After spending last week in isolation, it’s good to be back on deck again. With less than two weeks to go before the end of the term there is still a lot to do. Our last day of the term is next Friday 24 June. This will be a big day on our Bell Post Hill Campus as teachers complete their final packing in preparation for moving classrooms over the holiday break.

To ensure teachers have enough time to pack their rooms, we will be providing several fun engagements for the students to attend throughout the day. These fun activities will be supervised by other teachers and staff members and include performances from visiting artists, an author reading, drumming sessions, fun in the pool for some year levels, board games and movies.

The last day of school will be a casual clothes day for students. The Student Representative Council have suggested students wear colours of the rainbow to support Pride Month. Alternatively, students are welcome to choose their own theme as long as their clothing is appropriate for the activities they are doing. A list of activities will be shared with families separately so you can prepare in advance.

Semester one reports will be published next week. You can access student reports through KIC Online. Keep your eye out for separate communication in your inbox soon.

Upcoming Documentary

COMING TO THE KIC COMMUNITY IN TERM 3!

iNDIEFLIX Shines the Light on Anxiety with this Must-See Documentary:

“ANGST: RAISING AWARENESS AROUND ANXIETY”

ANGST will be available for the KIC Community to watch from 15 – 21 August, with an online panel session on Wednesday 17 August at 7pm.

What is the difference between “being anxious” and having an anxiety disorder? What can we do about the 634% rise in use of Mental Health America’s online tool for anxiety since the start of Covid-19? Why is there still so much fear and stigma in just talking to others instead of hiding online? What can each of us do to make it better and best engage in a full and happy life?

Angst is on a mission: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. The documentary delves into all aspects of our society’s most common mental health challenge with:

  • Candid interviews with kids and teens, who discuss their anxiety, its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope
  • Expert perspectives, (from institutions such as Stanford University, Child Mind Institute), who talk about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects and resources to help
  • Tips, tricks and strategies to help reset thinking patterns, push back against anxiety and support others
  • Awareness that anyone can be touched by – and overcome – anxiety, via a unique and revealing interview with mental health advocate Michael Phelps, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.

Appropriate for viewers from 10+

Save the date! More information and links to come in Term 3.

Co-Curricular Spotlight

The music ensembles program at Kardinia is thriving! There are groups for musicians of all ages and abilities, for those both having lessons at school or outside the College. The ensembles perform at events at Kardinia as well as within the community. Students involved work together to use skills of creativity, active listening, problem-solving and, in the process, they build lifelong skills and friendships.

We are always looking for new members to take part. Please contact the band director if you have any queries or would like to join. Or perhaps you need a band/live music for your next function? We’d love to hear from you!

The groups are listed below and are directed by the classroom and instrumental music staff at Kardinia.

This year we have the following ensembles:

School TV – Internet Addiction

For children and teenagers, there is no doubt that the Internet can be an excellent resource for information, communication and entertainment, but more and more Australian parents are concerned about excessive time online.

Today’s youth are the early settlers in a remarkable new world. Unfortunately, parents feel as though they are shut out of this world, often not knowing, nor understanding, what happens in this online environment.

It is up to parents to monitor, not just what their children do online, but also the length of time they spend online. Many of the online games children play have parental controls. However, parents do not always choose to use them. Banning is not the answer. A better strategy is to give kids access, but be informed, set some rules, monitor and supervise. To ignore this responsibility could create significant psychological and social problems for their children in years to come.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
