Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 14 September 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 14 September 2022

From the Principal

And so, we find ourselves in the final week of Term 3 2022. A term not without its challenges but one where there was also much to be celebrated.

This week our Year 6 students are sharing with family and our school community their PYP Exhibition products, a culmination of hours of work and inquiry. It is always amazing to see the quality of work and deep thinking that comes out of the PYP Exhibition. The actions that our students take along the way to make a positive difference in the world are also very impressive.

Speaking of impressive, this week the Senior School will undertake the process of voting for the College Prefects for 2023. Earlier in the week I had the privilege of interviewing all the students who put their name forward for College Captain. It was a day and a bit of interviews, but such a lovely experience to hear from these wonderful young people who want to act in service to the College and have already demonstrated so many ways in which they have made the most of the many opportunities available to them throughout their school years.

It was fitting that the interviews took place on a week when much of the world is taking time to honour and remember the life of Queen Elizabeth II, someone who dedicated her life to the service of her community.  I finish today with a quote on leadership from Queen Elizabeth II: “I know of no single formula for success, but over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.”

I have no doubt that whoever is chosen to lead the College as our Captains in 2023 will demonstrate those universal attributes of leadership.

From the Head of Senior School

Dear Parents and Students,

On Friday this week, classes for all Senior School students will cease at 2.20pm and buses will depart at 2.35pm and 2.40pm. Classes will resume on Monday October 3.

Students who are completing subjects in either the IB or VCE can anticipate spending at least some of the holiday break on study. Students in all other year levels should have a break from study and homework.

On Friday this week the Senior School will complete the process of selecting the 12 prefects for 2023. The candidates for College Captain and House Captain have already been interviewed. For each role six candidates have been selected to go through to the next stage of the process. Candidates for College Captain will address a Senior School Assembly and candidates for House Captain will address their respective House Assemblies.  Following the assemblies, staff and students will vote for their preferred candidates in a secret ballot. The Prefects for 2023 will be announced at the start of term four.

The final assembly on Friday will offer the opportunity to complete a number of important matters, beginning with the observance of a minute’s silence in remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We will also have the opportunity to celebrate some significant student achievements in hockey, soccer and in the Performing Arts. Both our boys’ and girls’ soccer teams reached the finals, while our hockey team reached the grand final.

On Friday two members of the teaching faculty, Lesly Windle and Kim Johnson will begin long service leave. We wish them both a well-earned extended break. Maureen Walsh, one of our Senior Maths teachers, will retire from the profession on Friday. She leaves KIC after seventeen years, with our best wishes and a deep sense of appreciation for her professionalism and dedication.

I am sure you will join me in expressing thanks to the staff and in wishing them a restful and enjoyable break from classes. In many instances they will continue to support students preparing for final exams and all of them will spend time preparing for their term four classes.

From the Head of Junior School

Student Led Conferences and PYP Exhibition
It was wonderful to see students from K4 to Year 6 sharing their learning with families at the Student Led Conferences (SLCs) yesterday. K3 students will host their SLCs tomorrow. As part of the SLCs our Year 6 students presented their PYP Exhibition to their families. Today, our Junior School students were treated to a special morning visiting the various exhibits and talking to Year 6 students about their chosen issues and related actions. Well done to all students for the amazing way you articulated your learning.

Chess Club Awards
Congratulations to the following students who were presented with Term 2 Chess Club Awards at the Junior School assembly this week:

  • 1st – Ryan Zhang
  • 2nd – Neel Kulkarni
  • 3rd – Zoe Drake

Year 5 Canoe Training
Last week our Year 5 students engaged in some canoe training as part of their PE program. One element of their training was learning how to manage when a canoe capsizes.

Division Athletics
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Division Athletics last week. For a full update, check out the Junior School KIC Online News updated by Mr Russell.

Family Breakfast and Team Colours Day
We have had a great response to the Junior School breakfast being hosted by KIC Connect this Friday. As a bonus, we are asking students to dress up in their team colours on this day, the last day of term. There is no cost for the casual day. Students can choose to wear the colours of their favourite sports team including footy (I’m sure the Cats will be well represented), netball, hockey, soccer and more.

Casual Bus Travel

Dear KIC families,

This is a friendly reminder that all Casual Bus Bookings are to be made through our Bus Management app (RollCall) going forward. Casual bus passes are no longer available at Student Services.

Withdrawal from the College

If you are planning on withdrawing your child from the College, one full term’s notice in writing is required, or one term’s fee in lieu of such notice is payable. For example, notice given in Week 2 of Term 4 will require fees to be paid up to and including Week 2 of Term 1 the following year. Please email marketing@kardinia.vic.edu.au with any questions or if you are planning to withdraw your child from the College at the end of the year. Thank you.

The Big Freeze is coming to Kardinia!

It may be the start of Spring, but September 16 is forecasted to be one of the most freezing days of the year! For the Big Freeze, we will see some of our own KIC staff members take the plunge to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research, in an attempt to find a cure to this devastating disease.

We are now accepting donations to individual teachers and the ‘Kardinians’ group as a whole! To donate, click on the link below: https://hub.fightmnd.org.au/diy-big-freeze-8/kardinians-2

We hope to raise as much as we can in support of FightMND research as they work towards a cure. Please help us by being a part of the 2022 Kardinia Dunk Tank!

Hockey News

The 2022 season for the under 17’s team was a great success and after two long years we finally got to play a full season, leading to us winning the minor Premiership by a goal difference of just one! The season certainly had its ups, downs and disruptions but despite these it was a great season and the team came together so very well.

We were without a goalie until the finals series, with U14 player Mitch Warne stepping up to help us out. He was a brilliant asset and settled into the team seamlessly. The pace of the game was a bit faster than he was probably used to, but it did not show and he pulled off some fantastic saves to get us to the Grand Final.

Our road to the Grand Final was not easy but the team played one of the best games this year to beat Torquay 3-2 in the first final, putting us straight through to the Grand Final against long-time rivals Newtown Strikers. The final game was incredibly intense and some brilliant hockey was played by both teams. Kardinia were 2-0 down at half time but by the end of normal time it was 2-2, thanks to some very calm and measured hockey where everyone played a part to get the result we needed to head into golden goal time.

Unfortunately, it was not our day and Newtown were first to score in extra time. The disappointment was enormous but this group of kids played brilliantly and I could not have asked anymore of them. They should be very proud of what they have achieved this year.

It has been my pleasure and privilege to have coached them this season. They are a fantastic group!

U17 Kardinia Team: Angus Ayerbe, Oliver Ayerbe, Angus Borcshman, Henry Burke, Jack Burke, Austin Evans, Willem Evans, Max Lee, Will Madner, Charlotte Norton, Aleesha Smith, Declan Smith, Jude Tannahil, Charlie Watson, Mitch Warne.

Body Kind Youth Survey

Youth Voices Can Make a Difference

Butterfly Foundation is inviting all young people aged 12 – 18 to have their voices heard about body image.  This is a chance to complete the first national survey on body image, the Body Kind Youth Survey, so Butterfly can better understand the body image experiences of young Australians, and get young peoples’ views on what needs to change to create a more Body Kind Australia. The online survey is voluntary, anonymous, has ethics approval, takes 15 minutes and requires parental consent for under 15’s.

Help Butterfly help more young people to be kind to their body and encourage all young people to take part; there’s even a chance to win a gift voucher.

We had such a fun time doing the MS Readathon this year and as a school we raised an amazing $9,378 for a great cause. A special mention goes to our top fundraiser Georgie Nguyen who raised $1,819. Well done Georgie! Also thanks to Darci Brien and Matilda Gordon for helping me promote the MS Readathon as part of their exhibition. Thanks to everyone who participated this year, raised money and read lots of books, we couldn’t have done it without you!

From the Archives

There is currently an expanse of dirt overlooking Corio Bay, where the Upper Primary classrooms once resided. However, over the next few months Stage 2 of the Junior School Development Project will commence, with a proposed completion date of January 2023.

Morongo’s Lucy Shaw Boarding House, established in 1967, was dedicated to Morongo’s second principal, Lucy Shaw. The boarding house officially opened for Morongo’s Senior Boarders in 1968.

With the opening of Kardinia International College in 1996, the boarding house was initially used for our international students; however, with the establishment of the Family Homestay Program for overseas students, the building was repurposed.

In late 1998, work began on the redevelopment of the Lucy Shaw Boarding House, for the Upper Primary. The number of Junior School students had dramatically increased in the early years, and the building was needed for classrooms. Additional portables were added on the west side and minor modifications have occurred over the years; however, the structure was no longer suitable in its current configuration or condition.

This next stage will see:

“…the demolition of the current Upper Primary building and the construction of a new building which will contain Year 3, 4 and 6 classrooms, reception, offices and a large conference room. The redevelopment will also include new outdoor multi-purpose courts, gardens, playgrounds and other play and passive spaces.

The new classrooms will be significantly bigger in size and will have the flexibility of being opened to both a shared space directly outside the room and to the adjacent classroom. Each classroom will also have direct access to an undercover outdoor space. Classrooms will be grouped into pods of three to accommodate an entire year level and are designed to ensure that learning spaces can be set up in many different ways.”   (enews- 6.10.21)

School TV – Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are a serious, potentially life-threatening mental health illness that can have significant physical and emotional effects. It is an illness that does not discriminate, affecting both males and females of all ages and backgrounds. Although often starting during adolescence, recent data shows that it is now becoming more common for children under the age of 12 to be diagnosed. Often, an eating disorder develops as a way for a young person to feel in control about what is happening in their life. It can be triggered by personal, environmental, psychological, biological or social factors. Although the focus is on food, weight and shape, there is often an underlying issue being masked by the eating disorder. There are many things that parents can do in the prevention of an eating disorder, but they do need to be aware of the warning signs.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
