Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 13 October 2021

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 13 October 2021

From the Principal

Tomorrow is officially the last day of school for Year 12 students before they commence SWOT VAC and then undertake their exams. It is always bittersweet to farewell Year 12.  We know that they need to leave, spread their wings and enter the wide world, but we also know we are going to miss them.

This year is one of the hardest farewells I will experience, as not only will I miss these wonderful young people, but my three girls Stella, Alice and Olivia are also part of the cohort of graduates. For those of you who have children in the younger years, my only advice is to treasure every moment, the fun, the happy, the challenging moments.  Embrace them all, for all too soon those school years come to an end.

For my fellow Year 12 parents, like me, you probably have very mixed emotions. While the time has gone by in the blink of an eye, when I think back, so much is also packed into the school years. My girls have lived in two different countries and three different states in Australia. They have seized opportunities, tried new experiences, worked hard at school, found subjects they love and those they will be happy to leave behind.

They have gone from learning to tie their shoelaces and count to ten, to knowing more than I will ever know about physics, chemistry, global politics, the list goes on. They have overcome significant challenges, none more so than the challenges faced by everyone over the last two years. Throughout it all they have been taught, inspired, supported, cared for and challenged by amazing teachers across three different schools.

The last two years have not been what any of us would have hoped for the final years of school for Year 12.  There have been many experiences they have missed out on, but it is important to remember that, with our help and guidance, they can also begin to understand that in every experience, good and bad, we can learn and grow.

I have no doubt that our current Year 12s will have developed much greater empathy, awareness of global issues and an appreciation for the importance of human connections, simply through their experiences this year.

There will be an opportunity to properly farewell Year 12 in their Graduation Ceremony after examinations, but as they leave us tomorrow, my hope for them is that they will exemplify in the lives they go on to lead our College Vision of being knowledgeable, compassionate globally minded citizens who act as agents of positive and sustainable change.

From the Head of Junior School

This week it has been wonderful to see most of the Junior School back on site. Year 3 and 4 students returned yesterday for two days, and tomorrow we look forward to welcoming our Year 5 and 6 students for the remainder of the week.

Covid Reminder
Thank you to all families for supporting us in adhering to our Covid protocols. Please be reminded of the following;

  • All Year 3-6 students are required to wear a mask when indoors at school unless an exemption applies. Students should bring their own masks from home.
  • Students in Foundation Year – Year 2 are encouraged to wear masks.
  • Parents and essential visitors must always wear masks when on campus unless an exemption applies.

At school we will continue to support students with hygiene practices, including hand washing and sanitising. All classrooms are well ventilated with regular cleaning occurring.

Book Week
After postponing Book Week earlier in the year, we have determined a new date. See below for details of the Dress Up Day on Wednesday 3rd November (Week 5) for all Foundation Year – Year 6 students. Kindergarten students will receive separate information about dressing up during that week.

New Junior School Construction
Progress continues on the new Lower Primary building with civil works starting this week. It is exciting to see the area being prepared for construction to start soon. Below is a progress report from the construction team at Plan Group.

The song is number one in Greece, 18th globally on Shazam and 20th on the German Spotify streaming charts.

Mindfulness

Recent studies have shown that one in seven primary school children have significant mental health disorders, and one in four secondary school students have psychological problems. Every year, in the last five years, that number has increased. Mindfulness, is the practice of being in the moment, being present and being open to what you’re focusing on. Mindfulness is all about building resilience. It is not a replacement for therapy or medication for mental health issues but will hopefully reduce the need for it later on.

Research has proven that mindfulness has endless benefits for children. This school taught activity is on the rise, and many experts are wanting it to be a compulsory component of the national curriculum. Not only does mindfulness calm a child’s mind, but it has also been proven to reduce disruptive and bullying behaviour in schools.
