Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 10 November 2021

Home Kardinia eNews – Wednesday 10 November 2021

From the Principal

Tomorrow, 11 November, our College will pause to remember and honour the sacrifices countless people have made in service to their country. It continues to be an important reminder to our students of the cost of war and why peace is worth striving for.

Back in 1992, I was fortunate enough to visit Anzac Cove and witness firsthand the harsh environment upon which the Anzacs fought. I was also overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of the Turkish people that we met. It was so difficult to comprehend that 77 years before we had been at war.

At Anzac Cove stands a memorial with an inscription, attributed to Atatürk, which pays tribute to his former foes and reflects his understanding of the cost of war:

“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours… You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

I was very moved reading this inscription at Anzac Cove and the memory has stayed with me. As our students gather tomorrow, I want them to understand that our cornerstones of Living the Motto – Wisdom leads to Respect and Friendship and International Mindedness are not just words but are designed so that we can reach out the hand of friendship, look to have empathy and understanding of others and different perspectives and create a more peaceful world.

From the Head of Junior School

Lower Primary Athletics postponed
Unfortunately, today’s weather has prevented us from hosting the Lower Primary Athletics Day. This event has been postponed with further details about a new date to be shared with families soon.

PYP Exhibition success
Last Wednesday our Year 6 students hosted the PYP Exhibition. This event was held virtually, with families tuning in from home as the students led them through an online journey of discovery. We are especially proud of the depth of inquiry and action that our Year 6 students achieved this year. They displayed great resilience, commitment, and passion through challenging circumstances. Congratulations to our Year 6 students and staff for ensuring this year’s event was truly exceptional. Congratulations must also go to all our Year 6 parents, who should be immensely proud of their children.

Grove Orchard
Year 5 students recently enjoyed planting more than 50 new trees in the Grove Orchard. The trees are supplied by Werribee Park Heritage Orchards (WPHO). WPHO have been helping students learn about heritage fruit trees and have assisted us in selecting varieties of peaches, plums, apples and pears to complement the existing species planted in 2017.

GLAM and GFLOI Programs – 2021

During Term 2 and 3 of this year, Tamsyn Duthie, Georgia Edwards, Zoe Verikios, Xavier Lee, Yusef Mathlum, Jack Cuttler and Benjamin Larcombe-Brooks participated in the Girls Leading Advance Manufacturing (GLAM) and Geelong Future Leaders of Industry Program (GFLOI), which they all completed successfully. Both programs utilised Geelong Manufacturers and mentors to help promote careers in engineering and manufacturing through a wide variety of online workshops and seminars. The emphasis of the GLAM Program was to encourage more girls to take up STEM opportunities. Below are the thoughts of two of our student participants about the program.

“During the Girls Leading Advance Manufacturing program, or GLAM project for short, students in Geelong were able to learn about the logistics behind manufacturing, potential career paths and the engineering industry, from experienced professionals in the field. Although COVID restrictions did not allow us to visit sights and interact in person as other students had done in the past, we were still able to hear from engineers, scientist and other employees working for companies such as Ford, Viva Energy, CSIRO, and the Geelong Tech School online. During the program I learnt about how much of a vital role engineering plays in everyday life, for example by creating safer cars at Ford or longer lasting and better performing radiators at Air Radiators. I learnt about the wide range of career options in these industries and the qualities employers look for, such as creativity, teamworking abilities and ingenuity. I also had an opportunity to learn to use Fusion 360, a 3D modelling program, with The Geelong Tech School. I would absolutely encourage future students to apply for this program so they can take away knowledge to further themselves as I have.”

 Zoe Verikios, Year 10 student

“The GFLOI program provided a great opportunity for me to learn about the still thriving manufacturing scene in the Geelong region. While we were unable to undertake physical tours, the seminars we undertook with different industry leaders provided me with a vast insight on potential pathways and opportunities that I can undertake for a future career in manufacturing.”

School Photos 2021

Annual school photos will be taken at Kardinia International College by Arthur Reed Photos on Monday 15, Thursday 18, and Friday 19 November 2021. Please note sibling photos will take place in the afternoon of Friday 19 November.

Students must wear a tidy and clean uniform, and have their hair tied back.

There is no need to return any forms or money to school.

Unique image codes will be issued to all students on/after photo day so families can register online to view images when they become available in the webshop.  Registration is simple, just follow the 3 simple steps on your child’s personalised flyer once you receive it and remember to add the codes for all your children attending this school. Even if you registered last year, it’s important that you do again this year using your child’s 2021 image code to link their images for the current year with your contact details.

When images are ready to view and in the webshop, all parents who have registered will be notified by SMS and email.

Once registered, please wait for notification that 2021 images are online to view before making your purchase.

Remembrance Day Resources

The book “The Victoria Cross – Australia remembers” which was presented to the College last week is now available for borrowing. Details here.

There is a playlist here on Storybox Library of some lovely picture books.

During the last fortnight whilst working with the ‘Researching the Modern World’ students, we accessed the State Library, which amongst other amazing collections has one called ‘Living the War‘ that compliments the ‘Writing The War’ exhibition, currently showing in Palmer Hall, and presents just a sample of the WWI stories held by the Library. These collections have the links to images, photos and diaries.

Though many children will refuse to go to school at some stage in their lives, school refusal is very different to truancy. It is a more serious condition than separation anxiety and often stems from a child’s anxiety about school. They may be worried about their school work, interacting with other kids, dealing with teachers, playing sports or being away from family. School refusal is a behaviour that can also be accompanied by sadness or depression, physical symptoms and social isolation. This condition is equally common amongst boys and girls, from all socioeconomic groups and across both primary and secondary levels.

Website Design and Development

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
