Kardinia eNews – Thursday 24 March 2022

Home Kardinia eNews – Thursday 24 March 2022

From the Principal

Last week I had the privilege of attending the AHISA and ISA forums in Canberra at which Principals from Independent Schools across Australia were in attendance. The keynote speakers were wide ranging and all experts in their field, from the Acting e-safety Commissioner to the Chief Economist from CommSec.

One highlight for me was hearing from Karen Mundine, the CEO of Reconciliation Australia. Karen challenged us to move forward in our reconciliation journey going from “safe to brave”, finding ways to practically contribute to reconciliation and use education as a driving force. Her speech was inspirational and challenging.

As many of you will be aware the College has, as part of our Strategic Plan, a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which we have had formally endorsed.  Having a RAP, however, is only the start of the journey.  Bringing it to life and using it as a force creating unity is the challenge and the exciting part of the journey.

For this reason, I was delighted that we were able to welcome Denise Charles and Gerard Pol from the Koorie Education Unit at the Department of Education to speak with our staff on Monday afternoon to start conversations about Reconciliation. Their presentation was thought provoking and provided us with a framework for taking this journey as educators.

I look forward to continuing this journey with our school community.

Busking Week
We were fortunate this week to hear a range of Junior School students playing instruments at lunchtime. The courtyard outside the Inquiry Centre became a hive of buskers each lunch time as students and staff alike enjoyed listening to live music. Well done to Mrs. Essery, Ms. Moore and the Performing Arts Student Committee for organising the event, and of course a great big congratulations to all the performers.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Bookings for the Parent Teacher Interviews on Friday 1 April are still open. If you haven’t had a chance to make a booking yet, please log in to KIC Online Student Information and do so before 29 March. Co-Curricular News

Kardinia had a mammoth weekend down at the Barwon River over the weekend with what is the pinnacle of the School Girls Rowing Calendar, Head of School Girls. Over 2200 schoolgirls from 45 schools across the state competed over three long days. This year’s event did not disappoint and really delivered on what Kardinia’s Co-Curricular Program aims to achieve in the development of our students outside the classroom. On so many occasions the crews showed the power of working collaboratively and the benefits of problem solving quickly to overcome great adversity.

Our students had every rowing challenge thrown at them from changes to crews, crabs, a broken oar, and a dislodged seat, to extremely close finishes and epic pushes. Without fail the students stepped up every time, showing great resilience and with some quick thinking, clear communication, courage and sheer determination. They made some impressive recoveries, resulting in triumphant finishes, PB times, and some medals.  The comradery and the fun had was obvious, as was the true Kardinia spirit both on and off the water. The students were great ambassadors for the College.  Certainly a roller coaster of emotions across the weekend; intense nerves, tears and triumph – and that was just amongst the parents! 😉

Reading has been re-ignited and it’s all due to #BookTok!

If your household is anything like mine and your teens and young adults are using/watching TikTok, sharing with you viral dances and prank videos – don’t despair, for within TikTok is the wholesome world of #Booktok that has been reigniting reading amongst teens and adults alike. #BookTok creators share video reviews and recommendations, book hacks and book memes.

Students have been saving these videos and screenshots of books and coming into the Learning Commons and asking, ‘have you got this book?’ Words to warm a librarian’s heart! They are sharing books and recommendations with each other and amongst the students studying at lunchtime today, I saw over a dozen students simply reading for pleasure. (And noted many #BookTok titles)

For readers who can’t decide what to read next, #BookTok creators have curated lists like “Books to make you cry” “Books I couldn’t put down,” “Books to make you think” and my favourite “Books that made me forget I was reading”

Here is a link to KIC’s favourite #BookTok titles so far in 2022:

School TV – Social Media and Digital Reputation

Social media has become such an integral part of a teenager’s life that it can cause anxiety and lower their self-esteem. Modern teens are learning to do most of their communication whilst looking at a screen instead of another person. They are missing out on very critical social skills.

And dependant on what they are communicating online, it can affect their digital reputation. Friendships, relationships and even future job prospects are all at risk. As a parent, It is very important that you are aware of what picture they are painting of themselves online.

Once information makes its way online it can be difficult to remove. Images and words can be misinterpreted and altered as they are easily and quickly shared around. Privacy settings on social media sites need to be managed in order to protect your child’s digital reputation.
