Kardinia eNews 1 February 2023

Home Kardinia eNews 1 February 2023

From the Principal

And just like that, we are into the second month of 2023 and the start of another school year.

I always love the first day of school.  It is filled with anticipation and excitement, a few nerves and much joy as staff and students reconnect. Yesterday felt extra special, our community members appeared really upbeat, people appeared to have a little more energy and so many were very excited to see each other.

In our Foundation Years it was great seeing so many parents being able to take their little ones into their classes on the first day, which we have not been able to do for three years. There were very few tears and they were mainly from parents. I remember that time very well and I was quite literally a blubbering mess when my last child headed to school for the first time. Now he is starting his final year, his last first day and the time has flown by.

My advice to all parents, and especially those with children starting school for the first time, treasure these moments as much as you can amidst all the challenges and frustrations that come with being the parent of a school aged child.  The memories are precious and the time is over far too quickly.

From the Head of Junior School

The first day of the year is always exciting and yesterday proved no different for our K4-Y6 students. In fact, there seemed to be a greater buzz in the air from students, staff and parents than we’ve perhaps seen in recent years. I know that I am feeling very optimistic about the year ahead and am most looking forward to bringing our Junior School community closer together again.

Recently I have sent emails to parents outlining key information about:

  • New staff
  • Drop-off and pick-up routines
  • Seesaw Learning Journals and Blogs
  • Key dates for Term 1
  • JS Car Park pedestrian access changes
  • Welcome Evening dates and times

If you have not received this communication, please contact our JS Reception on 5247 3338.

Duke of Edinburgh 2023 Information Night

A parent information session will be held for new participants who are interested in joining the 2023 program on Thursday 9 February, at 7:00pm in the Hall.

Kardinia International College has had a significant number of students participate in the program and receive their Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. The Bronze Award is targeted at Year 9 students (age 14 and above), Silver is targeted at Year 10 students (age 15 and above), and Gold is targeted at Year 11 and 12 students (age 16 and above)

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework, which challenges young people to find their purpose, passion and place in the world. The Award equips and empowers participants to achieve their personal best, learn to take responsibility for goals and choices, become connected to and actively engaged within their community, make a real difference to society through their positive contributions and involvement and learn to persevere and overcome barriers to success.

Barwon Regatta – 28 January 2023

Inter and Senior Squads

Our first regatta of the season and what a day! All crews rowed exceptionally well, not letting the 34°c heat and wind affect their positive attitudes and determination. Their developed fitness and resilience were certainly evident with many crews having 4 races in the challenging conditions. Commentators described each of the Kardinia crews as stylish and competent; high praise to hear over the loudspeaker and recognition of their hard work and commitment to the demanding team sport of rowing.

The Kardinia culture was evident with the girls cheering on and supporting each other, graciously congratulating other competitors, and from the parents, the loud cheer squad from the banks. A fun day for all and we look forward to the next event.

From the Archives

Kardinia International College acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the College stands, the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and recognises their unique culture and spiritual relationships to the land, waters and seas.

The extensive property on which Kardinia now resides, has been under the custodianship of numerous individuals including John Calvert, who built the Morongo homestead in 1859. In 1926 the custodianship was passed to Geelong Presbyterian Girls College, until the vacant development was sold to educator, Mr Yoshimaro Katsumata, in 1995.

Mr Katsumata established a new school, initially promoted as ‘The Geelong International School (Morongo) Ltd.’ but due to the similarity to another local school, it was changed to ‘Kardinia International College’.

Kardinia International College opened at the beginning of the 1996 school year with Mr John Goodfellow as the inaugural principal.

Next week’s article features the opening of Kardinia International College.

School TV – Starting Year 7

When a child starts high school, they are suddenly becoming one of the youngest and newest kids at school all over again –– a small fish in a big pond! The transition between Year 6 and Year 7 is one of the biggest jumps in a child’s life and is a very important milestone. This can easily become a daunting time for students and parents alike.

Starting Year 7 poses many new challenges, but also exciting opportunities. It comes with a number of mixed feelings. Unfortunately for many Grade 6 students, 2020 was marred with school closures and remote learning due to the pandemic and the overall impact of this is still unknown. Studies have shown that the mental health of this age group already appeared to be deteriorating before coronavirus hit and it is expected that cases of anxiety and depression will be on the rise.

For many students, regular orientation activities at the end of 2020 were less than ideal. Therefore, many students may be feeling a little bit more anxious than usual about their expectations of starting Year 7 and finding their place in the “big pond”. As your child grasps new skills and engages in new study practices, it is important for parents to be supportive, but also realistic in their expectations. Parents and students can easily become overwhelmed during this time of transition, but there are a number of strategies that can be implemented to start things off on the right foot!
