Remote Learning in the Junior School (FY-6)

Our Approach

  • Learning is holistically focused, giving students the opportunity to develop cognitive, physical and social-emotional skills.
  • Learning engagements are open-ended, differentiated, challenging, and relevant to past and present learning.
  • Learning engagements encourage children and families to participate in tasks together.
  • Remote learning considers student wellbeing; there will be opportunities for students to share their feelings and manage any concerns they may experience.

Communication

As always, online communications are managed in a respectful and safe way. During remote learning, the Junior School will be communicating via Seesaw, email, Zoom and EdSmart. Please watch the video for more information.

Daily Routines

Students

  • Establish daily routines for engaging in the learning experiences.
  • Identify a comfortable, quiet space in your home where you can work effectively and successfully.
  • Regularly monitor Seesaw to check for learning tasks and feedback from your teachers.
  • Complete learning engagements with integrity and academic honesty, doing your best learning.
  • Meet commitments and due dates.
  • Communicate proactively with your teachers if you require support to complete learning engagements.
  • Comply with the KIC ICT User Agreement, including expectations for online etiquette.

Families

  • Establish routines and expectations, including times for active inquiry as well as times for quiet reflection.
  • Encourage your child to take responsibility and ownership of their time and their learning.
  • Support your child with developing their daily timetable.
  • Monitor communications from your child’s teacher.
  • Where possible, take an active role in your child’s learning.
  • Encourage physical activity.
  • Be mindful of your child’s wellbeing; speak to them regularly about concerns or challenges.
  • Monitor your child’s screen time and online presence. (see screen time and privacy guidelines below)
  • Communicate concerns or questions with the teacher via email.

Teachers

  • Each morning will include a Zoom session.
  • Check-in with students regarding social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Share the learning menu with students and families.
  • Plan learning engagements that are easily understood and facilitated by parents/guardians or explored independently.
  • Provide learning engagements that include time away from devices.
  • Provide opportunities for students to share their learning, relevant assessments and reflections on Seesaw.
  • Provide regular feedback to students.
  • Make themselves available via email to answer questions about the learning engagements.

Screen Time Guidelines (based on World Health Organisation recommendations)

We understand that there may be concerns about the amount of time students are spending on devices. This continues to be an area of research. The health, safety and well-being of our students is of paramount importance to us.

For students from K-FY, online videos, games and learning engagements should exceed no more than one hour per day, broken into a minimum of three sessions (i.e. a maximum of 20 consecutive minutes).

For students in Grades 1-6, online videos, games and learning engagements should exceed no more than two hours per day, broken into a minimum of six sessions (i.e. a maximum of 20 consecutive minutes).

Parental support will be essential in monitoring learners during screen-time activities and ensuring that breaks are provided.

Please note that video conferencing and live-stream lessons are not considered part of students’ daily screen time.
