Commemorating National Reconciliation Week

26/05/2021Sarah Milford

Recently the College observed National Sorry Day, which is recognised annually to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’.

Norm Stanley and Nikki McKenzie conducted a Welcome to Country ceremony and spoke about the importance of National Sorry Day. After this, students had the opportunity to reflect on what reconciliation means by coming together to create an Aboriginal flag with their handprints.

National Reconciliation Week is held from 27 May to 3 June each year, and it is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process. Our students have created art displays, been able to view documentaries and films and listen to music by Indigenous artists during lunchtime, and choose from a special menu.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week is ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action’, which urges the reconciliation movement towards braver more impactful action. We are pleased to have begun development of our Reconciliation Action Plan, which will provide a framework for the College to contribute to reconciliation both within the College and in the wider community.

Graphic design and sourcing professional help can make the difference when putting together outward facing materials. While there are many programs and web apps that can make things “appear professional” paying someone who knows industry software will make it allot of difference and give you peace of mind when promoting your brand.
